Finish Ambassador to Zambia Pertti Anttinen has bemoaned poor representation of Zambian women in political spaces.
Speaking at the Zambian councillors’ exchange visit to Finland press briefing in Lusaka yesterday, Ambassador Anttinen said at local government level, only 16 per cent of councillors were women, while the representation at national level stood at 11.4 per cent.
“Women in Finland constituted 37 per cent of local councillors with 53 per cent female representation in the local council in the capital Helsinki, while 42.5 per cent of Finnish MPs are women,” he said.
And Ambassador Anttinen said a delegation of five women representatives from Zambia’s five political parties had been selected to travel to Finland on an exchange programme.
He said the women were also going to acquire knowledge and information about good practices on gender equality and the promotion of politics by women.
“The exchange visit is part of the three-year project called Women in Governance and it is aimed at strengthening the women in local government for increased participation in politics,” he said.
Meanwhile, Zambia National Women’s Lobby chairperson Beauty Katebe said women were assertive and were willing to actively participate in various decision-making processes in their various political parties as well as councils.
The Embassy of Finland in collaboration with the ZNWL selected women from the PF, UPND, FDD, MMD and UNIP to represent the country at the councillors’ exchange visit to Finland
