THE FIFA World Cup live television coverage has landed nine bar owners of Lusaka in police detention for operating their premises beyond the stipulated time.
Lusaka City Council acting public relations manager Mulunda Habeenzu said in an interview that bar owners were taking advantage of the World Cup matches to keep operating after the legal closing time of 22:00 hours.
Some matches of the on-going tournament in Brazil end around 23:00 hours and others at about 02:00 hours.
“LCC in partnership with the Zambia Police conducted an operation where nine bar owners were picked up for non-compliance with the law. They are taking advantage of the games to close their bars beyond 22:00 hours,” he said.
Mr Habeenzu said the operation covered Kamwala and Kabwata townships.
He named some of the bar owners that were picked up as Matilda of Zacks Corner Bar, Naomi Sakala of East Gate in Kamwala, Chimuka Hechumba of Royal Splash and KCC in Kabwata.
He said the nine will be prosecuted and their licenses will be revoked.
Mr Habeenzu said the operation will continue.
He advised bar owners who wish to operate beyond the stipulated time to get permission from the council as there is a provision that allows them to do so.

The ONLY pigs who have taken advantage of the situation are you, bekanyangu. You would have exposed the bar owners to the provisions and then pounced on the none compliant. Not ‘pounce then educate’ nukupusa uku!

@Danny Mwaba! Please take note this offence is both detainable and also attracts a fine under the laws of Zambia.Infact before one obtains a liquor licence they the bar owers go through this same Liquor licencing act.So please do not blame the council. If people are able to drink beer everyday, why not save some money and buy Dstv/Gotvs for their homes to watch from homes.Watching a football match from a bar late in the night encourages loitering, robberies, infidelity and killings.

Judas well said, however watching soccer wth colleagues while taking 1 or 2 drinks feels good as if u re there cheering and analysing. At home mostly the wifes want to watch telemunda movie or nigerian movie dats way people prefer to stay late and watch in clubs.if u do a research majority of those watching soccer in bars have functional DSTV in their homes. The only way is to encourange bar owners to get permission for more hours till the world cup is over in which I presume the police will be informed to keep an eye around those bars.
