Four people, among them two teachers, died on the spot along the Mpongwe-Luanshya Road after they were hit by a vehicle while standing by the roadside.
Police spokesperson Charity Chanda said the accident happened at Kayenda trading area on Thursday around 17:30 hours. Among the deceased were two female farmers along with the two male teachers.
Ms Chanda said the accident happened after a Toyota Hilux registration number AAT 4396, driven by Chola Masanga, aged 56, hit into a Mitsubishi Canter truck registration number ABE 1274 which was indicating to turn to the right.
She said in a statement in Lusaka yesterday that the Hilux hit into the Canter truck, in the process the driver lost control and ran over the pedestrians as they stood by the roadside.
The driver of the Toyota Hilux has since been arrested and charged with four counts of causing death by dangerous driving and will appear in court soon.
Meanwhile, the Zambia police reiterated its warning against honking, describing it as an offence under the law.
Ms Chanda said in a statement that honking was unnecessary and advised citizens who were aggrieved to exhaust channels of dialogue with relevant authorities.
She said that police would not hesitate to discharge their duties and arrest all those who would be involved in honking as this would disturb public peace.
The warning follows the Grand Coalition on the Campaign for a people-driven Constitution’s resolve to honk in its demand for the immediate release of the final Draft Constitution by the Government.
Grand Coalition spokesperson MacDonald Chipenzi said the Friday honking on the demand for a people-driven Constitution would continue every Friday from 17:00 hours to 18:00 hours in Lusaka and other major towns.
