Kalusha Bwalya says lack of good sponsorship for African clubs has contributed to unprofessionalism in the management of football.
Speaking after attending an administrator’s course organised by SuperSport in Mauritius, the Football Association of Zambia president said sponsorship was a key element in bringing professionalism in the administration of football.
Kalusha said SuperSport’s sponsorship of African clubs would see the development of football on the continent.
“In Africa the most difficult part is professionalism…. Sponsorship is one of them and I am glad with what SuperSport is trying to do in order to train administrators on what we can be able to do with our brand called football,” Bwalya said.
“For us in Africa, we have to try and bring the other teams that are run from the back of the car, where there is no secretary, there is one person who is the chairman, secretary, treasurer and president,” he said.
Bwalya said there was need for sponsors to benefit from their sponsorship of football.
Bwalya hailed SuperSport for choosing Zambia, among great football nations, to pioneer the televising of the Super League matches.
He said the deal had helped Zambia market its football and its players overseas.
“Zambia has benefited a lot from SuperSport. I am proud that we are one of the first countries SuperSport came to before they even went to big countries like Ghana…. We are forming our own identity, we have a good contract (with SuperSport) we hope that once it is renewed, clubs would benefit more,” said Bwalya.

No, baKalu, the problem is that in Africa, football ain’t a huge business yet. Patronage is limited & facilities underdeveloped. We are miles away from profiting from sports.

So what are administrators like you doing about the problem? Can you provide an example of one Zambian player that has clinched a big contract overseas as a result of televising matches on Super Sport. All it has shown me personally is just how woefully lacking Zambian players are in all aspects of their game – speed, intelligence, technical ability etc. Probably just looking for an opening to generate more business for himself and that ugly white wife of his.
