A GRADE six Mazabuka schoolgirl has delivered a baby boy through caesarean section at Nkonkola rural health centre, where the mobile hospital outreach team had set up camp.
And Dr Robinson Mwewa, who is the mobile hospital outreach team leader, said early marriages and teenage mothers were rampant east of Mazabuka.
Meanwhile, the high number of women from Nkonkola village and surrounding villages seeking cervical cancer screening has pleased Dr Mwewa.
In an interview, Joyce Chooka of Mutukula village thanked the mobile hospital medical team for saving the life of her daughter, who went into obstructed labour.
“My daughter went into labour in the morning and had it not been for the mobile hospital, she would have died as it would have made normal childbearing process impossible. I did not have money to transport her to Monze or Mazabuka, she is in grade 6 and I want her to go back to school after this,” Chooka said.
She said the presence of the mobile hospital was a miracle for her daughter.
And Dr Kelvin Moonga, who conducted the caesarean section on the juvenile, confirmed that it would have been very difficult for the 15-year-old to deliver as the baby was not in a normal delivery position.
He said caesarean section was not conducted at rural health centres and Chooka and her juvenile daughter would have had to travel over 48 kilometres to Mazabuka to seek medical attention.
Dr Mwewa, in an interview at the close of the five-day mobile hospital outreach programme in Nkonkola, said medical challenges for the villagers near Chivuna Mission included issues of dental, eye and hernia among elderly men.
“We have noticed that there are a number of children who have children at a tender age. The issue of early marriages is still an issue here. It is common to find girls at 20 having two or more children, which means they started having children quite early. Early childbearing has come as an issue,” Dr Mwewa said.
He said cervical cancer screening was overwhelming with a lot of women from Nkonkola and surrounding villages being screened.
Dr Mwewa said the mobile hospital team had partnered with the Society for Family Heath (SHF) in the promotion of reproductive health, HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care.

Defilement belongs to the western world-not Africa or Zambia.Traditionally,a girl who has undergone initiation ceremony is ready for marriage.Initiation begins as soon as a girl begins to menstruate-usually below the age of 15years.So,the only form of defilement in African culture is having carnal knowledge with someone who is not yet initiated.Usually, the charges in form of animals or money are high.People are suffering in prisons because of the so called defilement and under 16years.It is time to adhere to our culture.
