RB Says The Claims Of His Return In Politics Were Totally Untrue

Rupiah Banda says he publicly retired from active politics in 2012 and should be allowed to enjoy his retirement.
And George Mpombo has maintained that Banda failed to demonstrate impeccable leadership qualities that could justify his comeback.
But Banda said the claims of his return were totally untrue.
Banda said it was final that he had retired from active politics.
“Since my retiring from active politics in 2012, I have never issued any statement to the contrary. So it’s very unfair for anybody to insinuate that I want to come back into politics,” Banda said through his deputy administrative assistant Kennedy Limwanya in an interview yesterday.
Banda said no one should get him into active politics because he made it categorical in 2012 that he had retired.
“No one should draw me into politics because I have retired. Let people leave me alone to enjoy my retirement,” said Banda.
“People should be fair enough to understand that I retired from active politics.”
Banda refused to dwell on the issue of his return to politics, stressing that it had no credence.
And reacting to Andrew Banda’s comment that he would defend his father, former president Banda, to the grave and that he takes great exception to people who attack him, Mpombo said Andrew was defending the indefensible.
“The shellacking in 2011 was an eloquent demonstration of no-confidence by the Zambian people in his leadership because the size of the defeat is historical within SADC circles. It was so huge and puts off any attempts of him to come back,” Mpombo said.
“I come a long way with Banda. We were both district governors. At one stage, when Kenneth Kaunda was threatened with deportation to Malawi, we were among the group that went to interview the late Betty from her bedroom when she was disposed with a stroke. The relationship I have with him gives me an idea to know about his leadership styles.”
Mpombo said his statement on Banda was not personal and should not lead Andrew into a realm of inanities.
“In fact, the best [description] of those calling for RB’s comeback, when he performed lugubriously when he was president, is wheelers because there was nothing. He never left a legacy in terms of transparency and accountability. His coming back into politics would just drug the country backwards,” Mpombo said. “I have no axe to grind against Banda but I was giving a glimpse of my experience under his leadership.”
Mpombo said Andrew had called him on Monday to charge at him but he told him he did not think that Banda was fit for leadership.
“He called me to complain. He was unsettled by what The Post had reported. I want to state that I have no axe to grind against the former president and my comment was directed to the school of thought that were pressuring him to come back to active politics,” said Mpombo.
