Visiting former Mozambique President Joaquim Chissano says Zambia’s political landscape has an influence on the stability of the Southern African region.
Mr. Chissano says countries in the region look up to Zambia the same way they look up to countries like Tanzania and South Africa.
Addressing a media briefing in Lusaka today, Mr. Chissano, who is the second President of Mozambique, says this is why he thinks that countries in the region cannot be indifferent with what happens in Zambia.
Mr. Chissano says any bad or good lessons from Zambia have a negative or positive bearing on the entire region.
And Mr. Chissano has also noted the need for African countries to continue educating their people on electoral process with the view of ending widespread electoral violence on the continent.
He says there is further need for political leaders to learn to have more confidence in established electoral institutions.
Asked to comment on the election of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe as SADC Chairperson and what impact his election will have on the region, Mr. Chissano says he thinks each country has its own problems and there is no one recipe of how countries should be governed.
The former Mozambique President says it is for this reason that he thinks that countries should be encouraged to find the best solution of governance.
Earlier Mr Chissano toured Lusaka Museum which he described as a comprehensive study of life and scientific progress.
He noted that the Museum is also a source of great interest to the region’s history and that it may also contribute to more unity in the region especially that it depicts what the links of the people are and the common struggle from slavery.
