A 26-YEAR-OLD man of Livingstone’s Zecco township has been sentenced to one year imprisonment with hard labour by the Livingstone Magistrate’s Court for breaking into a house and stealing a duvet worth K180.
Magistrate Benjamin Mwewa on Tuesday jailed David Zulu for breaking into Betty Munalula’s house and committing a felony therein.
Zulu on August 13 this year in Livingstone, broke into Ms Munalula’s house.
“I sentence you to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour with effect from the date on which you were arrested,” Mr Mwewa said
Evidence that the court heard was that Ms Munalula went out on a business trip and left her house in Malota township under the care of her neighbour Mwangala Mwandila.
Ms Mwandila told the court that on the fateful night, she secured Ms Munalula’s house before retiring to bed.
She testified that around 04:00 hours, she heard some noise in Ms Munalula’s house and when she went to check what was happening, her neighbours Sydney Mubo and wife Caroline Hakatambo informed her that they saw Zulu leaving the house with a white duvet.
In mitigation, Zulu asked the court to be lenient on him because he looks after his mother and his disabled elder brother.
He also submitted that he sponsors the education of a grade three pupil
“I’ m asking for forgiveness, I will never steal again,” Zulu said
