AN 80-year-old man of Maiteneke village in Chief Mwamba’s area in Mbala has died in an inferno after a grass-thatched house he was sleeping in caught fire on Tuesday evening.
Northern Province commissioner of police Charity Katanga disclosed to ZANIS in Luwingu that Felisto Simpemba was burnt to ashes while his wife, Rosina Simpemba, 67, sustained serious burns.
Ms Katanga said Mrs Simpemba, who sustained serious burns on both her hands and head, is battling for her life in Mbala District Hospital.
She said the deceased’s brother, Joseph Simutowe, 68, also of Maiteneke village, reported the incident to the police.
Mr Simutowe said the duo put a brazier inside their house to keep warm.
Their bed, made of grass, caught fire and burnt the old man to ashes while his wife managed to escape the inferno with burns.
Ms Katanga said police have authorised relatives to bury Mr Simpemba’s remains after investigations ruled out foul play. – ZANIS.
