Choma Gets Over 800,000 Condoms

The National AIDS Council (NAC) has delivered over 800,000 condoms to Choma in Southern Province following the critical shortage of the commodity in the area.
The consignment will be distributed in two other districts, namely Pemba and Namwala.
Choma district Aids co-ordinating adviser (DACA) Veronica Mweemba confirmed the delivery of the condoms in an interview.
“I can confirm that we have received a consignment of 120 boxes containing 864,000 pieces of condoms.
“Of the 120 boxes, 60 will be given to Namwala and some to Pemba and Choma districts,” Ms Mweemba said.
In Choma, the consignment will be distributed through 40 district AIDS task force stakeholders, among others, the Network of Zambian People Living with HIV/AIDS.
Choma, which is the provincial capital, was recently reported to have recorded the highest number of people that received treatment for syphilis and gonorrhoea, which are sexually transmitted infections.
This predicament was attributed to an increase in the number of people engaged in unprotected sex owing to a shortage of condoms in the area.
Ms Mweemba observed that when properly used, condoms help prevent the transmission of HIV and AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections.
“We had been facing a deficit of condoms in our district but we now have enough stock to last towards the end of this year.
“I urge people to utilise condoms as a family planning method, prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS, among others,” Ms Mweemba said.
