A 29-Year- old man of Livingstone’s Maramba township has been sentenced to one-year imprisonment with hard labour for stealing spoons worth K38.99 from Shoprite.
This was in a matter in which Joseph Simango was charged with stealing three sets of spoons from the chain store.
He pleaded guilty to the offence before magistrate Benjamin Mwewa.
On September 10, this year, in Livingstone, Simango was allegedly spotted by one of the employees of Shoprite stealing the spoons in question.
The accused allegedly hid the spoons in his pant and walked out of the store before he was apprehended at the car park by two workers of the chain store.
He was taken to Linda police station where he was questioned and later charged.
Simango told the court that he stole the spoons with an intention of selling them to raise money for medicine, as his wife was allegedly suffering from high blood pressure (BP).
In mitigation, Simango pleaded with the court for leniency, stating that he is a double orphan, married and has a child.
“My wife had no idea about the incident as I just left home to look for funds to buy her medicine,” he said.
And delivering judgment, magistrate Mwewa said the court had found Simango guilty of committing a felony.
“I am going to send you to prison to exclude you from the general public to deter you from committing similar offences,” he stated.
