By NANCY SIAME and STEVEN MVULA
A 23-YEAR-OLD woman of Mukanda village in Chief Mabumba’s area has drowned after jumping into Mansa River in a bid to escape the wrath of the owner of a cassava field from which she was allegedly caught stealing.
And a man of Mpulungu is admitted to hospital after being shot in the buttocks and knees by his acquaintance in unclear circumstances.
Luapula Province commissioner of police Malcolm Mulenga said yesterday that the incident happened last Tuesday afternoon but that the body was only retrieved on Saturday around 14:00 hours.
Mr Mulenga identified the deceased as Bupe Mubili.
“Ms Mubili had allegedly gone into another person’s cassava field but she was seen by villagers and she jumped into Mansa River for fear of being caught by the owner,” Mr Mulenga said.
He said the body was found floating in a decomposed state and it was immediately buried.
“We advised the family to properly mark the grave for any future investigations,” he said.
And a 32-year-old man has died after he was knocked down by a vehicle in a hit-and-run road traffic accident
Mr Mulenga said the accident happened on Friday around 19:40 hours at Kundulo village on the Mansa-Samfya road.
He named the deceased as David Mulonga of Nsonga village.
“The pedestrian was trying to cross the road when he was run over by a vehicle of unknown registration which was being driven by an unknown person and due to the impact, he died on the spot,” he said.
And Northern Province commissioner of police Charity Katanga said Christopher Selemani, 39, of Mengo village was shot by Milner Silumbwe of the same village.
“We have a report in which a man was shot at on both knees and the buttocks. We are investigating the matter as the cause of the shooting is not yet clear,” Ms Katanga.
Ms Katanga said Silumbwe is on the run. the incident happened on Friday around 18:00 hours.
And in Nchelenge, police are investigating a case in which a three-year-old child was stolen at night while its parents were asleep.
Mr Mulenga said the parents of the child identified as Bwalya Chola, 38, and his wife Constance Mwelwa, 26, were asleep when the baby disappeared from the house on Sunday.
Mr Mulenga said when the mother of the baby woke up around 03:00 hours, she noticed the child was not there and the door was slightly open.
The incident happened in Malulu village in Chief Kambwali’s area.
“The baby is the stepdaughter to Mr Chola who came and reported the case to police around 05:00 hours. Fortunately, the baby was found by a Mr Aston Chilolo in the bush who brought the baby to the police,” Mr Mulenga said
He said Mr Chilolo heard the baby crying and a man ran away and left her when he went closer to see what was happening.
“We have launched investigations into the matter and we will soon get to know who was behind the stealing of the child,” Mr Mulenga said.
