Three people have drowned in Ndola after their car plunged into Kafubu River while on their way home from a drinking spree.
And a 40-year-old fisherman of Senga village in Kaputa has allegedly murdered his friend over a K10 debt.
Copperbelt deputy commissioner of police Mukuka Chewe said the accident happened around 02:00 hours yesterday.
A Toyota Corolla plunged into the Kafubu River resulting in the drowning of Jeff Mwanza, 32, of house number 918, Kabushi township, who was driving the car, Sam Mbuyu, 24, of house number 5289, Mushili township and Weston Kauseni, 17,of house number 1542, also of Kabushi.
“The three died on the spot after their vehicle plunged into Kafubu River. The deceased are believed to have been coming from a drinking spree when they met their fate,” Mr Chewe said.
Police suspect that Mr Mwanza was overspeeding and the vehicle hit into the wall of the Bridge on Dag-Hammarskjold Road before it overturned and plunged into the river.
Mr Chewe said the vehicle was extensively damaged and the occupants were trapped in the submerged car.
He said the bodies have been retrieved and are in the Ndola Central Hospital mortuary.
In the murder case, Northern Province deputy commissioner of police Alfred Nawa and Kaputa district commissioner Chrispin Kachusha confirmed in separate interviews that police are looking for Jerries Katai, 40, for allegedly murdering Luckson Kalayi, of an unknown age.
Mr Nawa said the incident happened on Thursday around 17.00 hours at the same village.
He said Katai got annoyed and allegedly beat up Mr Kalayi for failing to pay back a K10 debt.
Katai had lent Mr Kalayi the money to help him with his fishing business.
Katai is on the run. Police say they have started investigations.

People should learn a lesson and desist from drunken driving. My heart goes to the bereaved families.
