People shun male herbalists for fear of being sexually abused, says Rita Kunda, a traditional healer.
And Traditional Health Practitioners’ Association of Zambia (THPAZ) president Rodwell Vongo has admitted that some male traditional healers take advantage of their female patients by sexually abusing them.
Kunda, 73 in an interview said female traditional healers and herbalists were more reliable than men because they respected their clients.
She lamented that male healers who sexually abuse female patients were tarnishing the image of genuine traditional healers.
“We women traditional doctors are more genuine than men because we respect both our male and female clients. But some of our male counterparts are fake and cannot be trusted because they always want to take advantage of vulnerable and unsuspecting women,” she said.
“I have been serving people as a traditional healer for over 30 years now. I have cured many illnesses including barrenness, prolonged periods and I even bring back runaway lovers within 24 hours.”
Kunda wondered why some male herbalists were asking barren women who sought their services to have sex with them as part of cleansing rituals.
“How can you tell a barren woman to have sex with you for her womb to be fertile or for her lost lover to return home? Why should a man take a defenceless woman in the bush or a secret place when attending to her? That is not just right. They just lie to women, they just want to sleep with them and do not even have powers to cure any ailment,” she added.
Kunda urged women to be cautious of traditional healers they consult to avoid becoming victims of gender-based violence and sexual abuse.
And Vongo said patients were free to choose the gender of traditional healers they wanted to consult from.
But he was disappointed to note that some male traditional healers were taking advantage of some of their unsuspecting female patients by sexually abusing them.
He emphasized that traditional healers and herbalists who had sex with their patients violated the THPAZ code of ethics.
“It is up to a person to choose which herbalist they would consult. Some women feel comfortable to be attended to by a fellow woman while others want the males. I want to urge women to report any sexually harassment they may encounter from any male traditional healers to relevant authorities. This will be the only way we will end the vice,” said Vongo.
