The authorities in Zambia have appointed the country’s defence minister, Edgar Lungu, as acting president, amid ongoing concern for the health of seventy-seven year-old President, Michael Sata. His office said he had left the country on Sunday for a medical check-up. He has not been seen in public since returning from the United Nations General Assembly last month, where he failed to make a scheduled speech. Mr Sata was due to preside over celebrations to mark fifty years of Zambia’s independence, this Friday.

The politics in Zambia sucks. The person who no one voted for is now acting president and possibly will be president by default. It is high time we started voting for running mates (vice presidents) in Zambia as it is for example in Malawi.
