Social Welfare Makes 200 Rural Students Lose Out On Bursaries

ABOUT 200 students who applied for bursaries in rural areas were not picked because the department of social welfare did not submit their application forms, Minister of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education John Phiri has said.
Dr Phiri said in an interview on Monday that he has engaged the Ministry of Finance to see how best rural-based students can be helped.
Dr Phiri said the omission by the department of social welfare resulted in many students not being awarded bursaries.
“I just hope that the committee which is looking into the final list of bursary applicants will finish on time so that the students can be able to register,’’ Dr Phiri said.
He also said the University of Zambia (UNZA) has extended the registration period for students to November.
Dr Phiri is confident that the omission by the department of social welfare will be avoided in future and more students will be awarded bursaries.

I have a friend who works for Social Welfare, from the challenges the department is facing such can happen…

    1. The department went without funding for 8 months (PWAS).You can confirm with the ministry. This posed a challenge in delivering reports on time.
2.Bursaries committee do not provide logistics to facilitate bursary report writing and home visits.Almost all the reports social welfare writes are based on what the applicant is saying (whether true/false). Home visits are not made. This results in wrong people finding themselves on the programme.

Surely, how do you expect the department to function effectively amidst such challenges???

The funding for this year of golden jubilee worse, the department failed to even buy a ream of paper and Tonner cartilage to facilitate the printing of bursary reports….In some instances applicants contributed and bought paper and cartilage for the office.Thats how sad the situation was this year…….i really feel sorry for my friend. He has no explanations to give to orphans he is paying for in schools, the orphaned babies who needs milk, the aged who needs food .e.t.c.
