Zambian President Michael Sata has died in London, where he had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness, three private Zambian media outlets said on Wednesday.
Reuters news agency also reported that a government source had confirmed the death.
“It is true. We lost the President. The acting president will make a statement soon,” the source said.
Government officials gave no immediate comment.
The reports said Sata had died on Tuesday evening at London’s King Edward VII hospital. The hospital declined to comment.
Sata, 77, left Zambia for medical treatment on October 19 accompanied by his wife and family members, according to a brief government statement that gave no further details.
There has been no official update on his condition and acting president Edgar Lungu had to lead celebrations last week to mark the landlocked nation’s 50th anniversary of independence from Britain.
Concern over Sata’s health has been mounting in the country since June, when he disappeared from the public eye without explanation and was then reported to be getting medical treatment in Israel.
He missed a scheduled speech at the UN General Assembly in September amid reports that he had fallen ill in his New York hotel.
A few days before that, he had attended the opening of parliament in Lusaka, joking: “I am not dead.” Sata has not been seen in public since he returned to Zambia from New York in late September.
Sata, who once worked as a railway porter in London, had been the country’s president since September, 2011 after winning a tight presidential race against the then incumbent, Rupiah Banda.

Sorry about his death but as usual typical of African leaders they rush to other countries for treatment leaving the poor to die in hospitals with inadequate facilities .When will our leaders start really start focusing on serving their own people?

Yes! The moment we learn to b factual about sicknesses of leaders in this country, we will definitely save most of them from untimely deaths. It is very worrying in this country and in this erra AND AGE THAT even learned people act more than cadres, fearing to tell the truth because they wonder where they will be next. Surely politics of poverty are killing the country. Let’s now wake up and be objective.

No. He went for medical check up so he is still fine i presume. If he is no more then Chella and the Govt spokesperson Katema and these Govt officials should be beaten with serious punches eqivalent to Catherine Phiri’s punches for misleading our country all this long..

What a great loss to Zambia,Chilufya you were the one who gave hope to many Zambians when they felt like leaving this country, You gave us everything to believe that Zambia can develop. For sure days of happiness for many Zambians have been short even the least person in society had hope for living.
Zambians let us come together and mourn our beloved president with peace and harmony, and let us pray for God’s direction in this stituation.

As it it no one can go beyond his capacity. Zambia, Let us mourn our last president with Honor dignity. Dad Sata, you have just gone ahead of us. May your soul rest in everlasting peace

As much as it saddens me to lose yet another president am deeply angered by the fact that presidents or the government of zambia never learn all the presidents that we as a country of zambia has lost and high profile government people always die in foreign countries isn’t it time that we learnt as country that we need to improve our healthcare systems and infrastructure to cater for our own the best example of a nation that is proud of its healthcare is Republic of South Africa I will give your the names of their leaders/fallen heroes that died in their home soil the best i can give is Nelson Mandela he died in southafrica they never at any time took him to america or isreal or india but their own hospital fought for mandelas life other heroes like steve tshwete, mbheki ,olive tambo, albertina sisulu all died in their mother land we as zambian can`t we feel ashamed that our own heroes always die in foreign countries hence the confusion of knowing when and how they die

May the soul of President Sata rest in peace. We shall remember you Sir for all your contributions to this Peace loving and God fearing nation.
Yes it’s high time our health facilities where given a face lift to do away with evacuations each time high profile people fall ill.
Mr health minister please open your eyes Zambians die even frm curable diseases.
May the good Lord give wisdom to our leaders to move this nation to higher heights …….and may a younger leadership be put in place now and the old ones just keep the fire burning but providing wisdom where the young will lack.
I rest my case. I love mother Zambia thus ll pray the hand of God to continue resting upon Zambia even as its a Christian nation. Zambia Pray the Lord is on the throne.
RIP our beloved president.
