A 91-YEAR-OLD woman of Chief Simwatachela’s area in Zimba is battling for her life at Zimba Mission Hospital after being repeatedly stabbed by unknown people on suspicion that she is a witch.
Southern Province deputy commissioner of police Milner Muyambango said yesterday that the incident happened on Saturday around 21:00 hours at the woman’s house.
He named the victim as Tedela Munkombwe.
“Unknown people entered Ms Munkombwe’s grass-thatched hut around 21:00hours and stabbed her several times with a knife, her condition is quite bad.
“People in the community believe the old woman is allegedly a witch,” Mr Muyambango said.
Cases of the elderly reportedly being killed or injured on suspicion of practicing witchcraft are rampant in some rural parts of Southern Province.
Killing or injuring a person on suspicion of practicing witchcraft is a crime under the Witchcraft Act .

Traditionally, African people attribute anything they do not understand (or do not want to understand), any incident or occurrence they cannot explain, to witchcraft.
In Senegal, they believe witches live inside the pawpaw fruit. The belief is that witches use it as their operational base at night.

In most Zambian villages, people always associate old people to witchcraft. This is wrong. People should realise that (apart from good health)long life can be attributed to positive factors in one’s life (positive behaviour) e.g. discipline and respect for one’s elders. Even the bible says “Respect your mother and father so that your days on earth may be long…..”.

People can suspect anyone of engaging in witchcraft, it is mostly vulnerable members (old people) of the population who are openly accused, and tortured to death.

In Malawi women with grey hairs and red eyes are branded witches. Old women, particularly those who are childless, are often accused of witchcraft.

EKET, Nigeria — The nine-year-old boy lay on a bloodstained hospital sheet crawling with ants, staring blindly at the wall.
His family pastor had accused him of being a witch, and his father then tried to force acid down his throat as an exorcism. It spilled as he struggled, burning away his face and eyes. The emaciated boy barely had strength left to whisper the name of the church that had denounced him – Mount Zion Lighthouse.
A month later, he died.
