Mumbi Advises Kaseba To Withdraw Her Candidature

Former Munali MP Mumbi Phiri has appealed to former first lady Christine Kaseba to withdrawal her candidature from the PF presidential race, because her decision is against cultural norms.

Ms Phiri who is also Zambia’s High Commissioner to Kenya says Dr Kaseba is not setting a good example because culturally, someone is expected to mourn their loved one for a reasonable period.

She has also expressed disappointed that five members from the same family are all vying for the presidency, and describing such action as an indication of lack of unity in the Sata family.

Ms Phiri was speaking in an interview with journalists in Lusaka today.

Dr Kaseba has filed in her nomination papers to contest the PF Presidency, becoming the only female applicant, in a race that has drawn the interest of nine male contenders.

Dr Kaseba says she has been compelled to join the race to save the PF from destruction or abandonment of the vision and ideals of the late President Michael Sata.

she is saddened and pained that the PF has been characterized by violence, divisions and acrimony in its efforts to find a new leader.

Dr Kaseba says the divisions pose a serious threat to the party and the realisation of the dreams of the late president Sata as contained in the party manifesto.

She is calling for unity of purpose to consolidate the gains the PF made under the leadership of her late husband.

Dr Kaseba says her grief of mourning the loss of her husband cannot be compared to the pain that would result if the party is allowed to die because of divisions.

For her, she says the true mourning of the late president would be to complete the work that he began.

She is also encouraged by the so many people within and outside the PF who have encouraged her to take the leadership of the party.

Dr Kaseba says she has consulted with her family and has listened to the calls urging her to contest the Presidency of the PF.

It is not only lack of respect for our culture for Dr Kaseba to start campaigning for presidency a week after her husband’s death but also immoral. When a woman loses a husband in death, not all relatives and friends come before burial. Due to difficulties in travel arrangements or other family or personal issues, others come weeks or even months later. During this period, the bereaved must be around to host those who come later and tell them how the spouse died. That is moral. But what would happen if late Sata’s aunt from the village who couldn’t make it due to an illness came and found that the bereaved has gone to Solwezi or Livingstone to campaign? Dr. Kaseba had better skipped this by-election and vied for presidency in the next presidential election; after all it is only one year later.

Imwe naimwe temimwe mwalefwaya ukupyana mukamfwilwa ninshi nomulume talabola? Culture aaaa! Ifyabola. Cant you imagine how long Dr. Kaseba suffered with his husband? Once someone has been terminaly ill even if we want to extend his life, at one point we say “Let him rest”.

If Dr. Kaseba does not want to continue with what her husband believed in, then they were not one. But I believe she wants to to ensure the destine of my President is achieved. Who understands HE MCAS better?

          November 21, 2014 at 7:05 pm

Firtly, from your well constructed English, Kennedy, I can tell that you are a learned person who understands that no two persons think exactly alike – not even twins. So we can’t expect Dr. Kaseba to take this country to the precise destiny that Sata had in mind. For example, we can’t tell whether or not the two had the same view on street venders. Kaseba could have appeared to support Sata on the issue but we can’t be sure what was really behind the medical doctor’s mind on the filth that is brought about by the venders.

Secondly, from the censure so far displayed by the public against the widow’s decision to draw a political dagger and step into the “Colosseum” we can tell that the respect and sympathy accorded her has evaporated with her tears. 2016 would have been the best time for her to exercise her rights stand for presidency. Patience pays. Tacamoneke bwino abafyashi besu ba Dr. Kaseba baletukwa insele sha mu politics ilyo fwe bana babo tucili ne cililishi.

          But the decision is hers.

So if we cannot be sure that Dr Kaseba cannot take this country to where Sata wanted it to go, since she cannot think like her husband, does it mean that all these who are vying the presidency cannot take the country to the destiny Sata wanted?

It’s funny how Ms Mumbi Phiri is still commenting about an event that is so yesterday. Dr Kaseba has a right to exercise her right to vie for any position at the forthcoming convention. Why should she be sidelined if she wants to. People have to understand that life goes on even after death. Have you ever heard of the saying that says ‘Let the dead bury themselves,..’. If you Ms Phiri you are still moaning, continue my dear for all we know you are moaning for your job security and welfare. And who are you to lecture us on cultural norms?Being married to someone does not make you a relation. If Mulenga Sata the son and Bob Sichinga can exercise their rights, why not Dr Kaseba. You continue moaning my dear some of us have moved on to the next chapter of this book. And by the way, what are you still doing in Lusaka when you should be in Kenya working.

move on to the next chapter at your own peril, if you havent first finished the previous chapter.

Move on, move on shani eh? Baali lufyanya ba mama.

No one says she doesn’t have a democratic right to stand, but she has failed to connect and understand the environment she’s in – Zambia.

By the way we are mourning, not ‘moaning’. moaning is something we hope she did with Mr. Sata when he was alive. Since he is dead, we want her to ‘mourn’. Not put his clothes in a sheetbed and disrespect his memory.

      • UKWA IHEME

        November 22, 2014 at 10:18 am

By the way, she packed the clothes in suitcases but Sata’s relatives advised her to put them in plastic bags, as per tradition. She did not wrap the clothes in “sheetbed”. May be bed sheet is better.

And…. if Sata’s relatives have no problem with Madam Kaseba’s move, why the hell do you have a problem with it? They are encouraging her to go ahead and contest. Who are you to lecture us on tradition? Preserve your tradition and watch your country go into ruins.

Mourning like prayer is a personal thing. Whereas other people mourn symbolically, Queen Cobra shall live without her soulmate. Nobody other than her knows how deep the pain touches. In King Cobra’s shoes, the Queen ably fits. Look at the nine men she is going to defeat! They are men of nine lives indeed.

Do you know the Bush Family in the USA? The Zambian constitution does not look at families, it looks at individuals, period. And world over, I have never come across a constitution which restricts on the basis of family other than the parentage close. For any clever person, it is actually a good strategy because I personally know that at the end of the day, the family will rally behind one person thereby bringing all their supporters together. Culture is even worse that Dr. Kaseba participating in what is noble. Ba Mumbi in your culture and mine, immidiately a spouse dies, you start discussing who should “Pyana” the widow or widower. Barely a week another man is asked to have sex with the widow and vise versa.

In the Bible, David once had a sick child and he could not bath or do anything meaningful but immidiately the son died and got burried, David bathed and ate and he began his work.

Dear Beloved and respected Sister Dr. Christine Kaseba
I have followed the process that is going on in Zambia more especially inn the PF the ruling party.
I have also read your concern that prompted you to join the race…
For sure you have the right views to enable you feel like taking the decision which you have taken. I am glad that you made several consultations and they gave you a go ahead.
My concern is that, this move has come at a wrong time which will make people to misunderstand you. You have 100% democratic choice to do what you have hoped for. However, kindly take my humble advise, that it will be better for you to contest in the 2016 General elections. If this position was meant for you, it will surely come back to you.
You have built yourself a very good profile which should not be destroyed. Remember, you are a Zambian and an African. The move taken now will be misunderstood and be taken as a weapon against you in the opposition rallies and from within your own party.
Those you consulted over looked this important and sensitive part.
You have all the qualities, but this one of Bana Kulila will weaken your position.
    Your Servant in Christ
