A ROBBER yesterday overpowered two Barclays Bank employees in Kabwe and got away with K1,228,090.
The daylight robbery happened at the automated teller machine (ATM) located at Puma Filling Station opposite Stanbic Bank on Independence Avenue.
Central Province commissioner of police Standwell Lungu confirmed the robbery, which eye-witnesses said happened between 09:00 hours and 10:00 hours.
A check at the crime scene by the Daily Mail around 10:00 hours found armed police officers conducting investigations.
Blood was also seen on the door of the safe room.
A police source explained that as two Barclays Bank employees were entering the safe room, a man swiftly approached unnoticed and attacked them with an unknown object.
After he overpowered the two, he grabbed the money inside the safe room and allegedly fled the scene without being noticed by people who were working at the filling station and those who were passing by.
One cashier sustained an injury on one of his hands and was rushed to Kabwe General Hospital while the other remained at the crime scene to help the police with investigations.
Eye-witnesses said there was no security guard at the ATM.
Sources revelead that K1,228,090 was stolen but Mr Lungu said only K20,000 was in the ATM.
