Grade 11 Pupil Loses School Fees In ‘Bonanza’ Gambling

A Grade 11 pupil of Chibombo Secondary School has missed the entire school term after he lost his school fees to a gambling game commonly known as Bonanza.

Chibombo District Orphans and Vulnerable Children Committee Chairperson Henry Lwiindi has told Zanis.

Mr Lwiindi says the pupil was recently given K475 by her mother to pay for his school and boarding fees, but he decided to try his luck by betting the entire money on the Bonanza game.

Mr Lwiindi says after losing the money, the boy reported the fate to his mother who however could not manage to raise him some more money for school fees, and therefore missed the entire term.

Mr Lwiindi has since appealed to the local authorities in the area to regulate the gambling business which he says has mushroomed in most of the drinking places in the district.

He says if gambling business is not restricted in the area, many children are likely to fall to the temptation of betting their parents’ hard earned money meant to be spent on other essentials.
