Zambians Made Mistakes In The Past To Vote For Older Presidents -Maureen
Maureen Mwanawasasays Zambians made mistakes in the past to vote for older presidents. Maureen’s husband, Levy Mwanawasa, was voted into office in 2001 at the age of 53 and died during his second term in 2008 aged 59.
Other previous presidents were Dr Kenneth Kaunda who become president at 40, Frederick Chiluba at 48, Rupiah Banda at 71 and Micheal Sata at 74. Speaking when she offered herself as chief campaign manager for UPND at Golden Bridge hotel yesterday, Maureen said Zambians were tired of experimenting with leadership. “My coming back to politics means business. The UPND is the only party that can take Zambia where we want it to be.
The office of the president is demanding and only a young person can manage to run it efficiently. You made a mistake of voting for older presidents in the past and you cannot make that mistake again. We need a young leader to carry our economy on his shoulders and it is for this reason that I endorse Hichilema beyond 2015. We are tired of experiments,” she said.Maureen pledged to be among Hichilema’s chief campaign managers, saying her late husband did not finish his term of office and that it was now time for Hichilema to finish Michael Sata’s term.
Meanwhile, Vernon Mwaanga said time for a generational change of leadership was now. “We are tired of hearing old people who tell young people that they are the future leaders without giving them the leadership. Time for generational change is now. Under HH, this country will be taken to the next level,” said Mwaanga.
Other notables that attended the launch were former MMD chairman Michael Mabenga, former Chawama member of parliament Geoffrey Simukanga and General Malimba Masheke.
