Lusaka Woman Discovers Hubby Has 5 Other Wives
The Chawama local court was not surprised that a woman sued for divorce after hearing that her husband had five other wives.
But Justice Sarah Nyendwa talked tough when she dismissed the claim, saying it is not a marriage as no bride price was paid.
This was heard in a matter where Doreen Chalwe, 36, of John Howard dragged Gaven Ncube 50 of Kamanga Township to court for divorce.
Chalwe told the court that at the time they were getting married Ncube who is from Zion Church, had three wives but married two more.
She said one of the wives lives in Kamanga Township where he shifted to and left her (Chalwe) in the ‘cold’ with her two children.
“Ever since he shifted to his other wife in Kamanga, he stopped providing for me and the children. I followed him to his home to complain about his neglect of us but he said the children were mine alone and that I should take care of them,” she lamented.
And in his statement, Ncube said he never met Chalwe’s parents to ask for her hand in marriage even though they have lived together since 2006.
He said he was surprised one day that Chalwe moved out of their home without informing him of her whereabouts.
According to Ncube, he was surprised that Chalwe could complain to the court that he was not providing for her and yet he told her to follow him whenever she needed money.
And during cross-examination, Justice Nyendwa asked Ncube when exactly the two got married and shaking his head he said, “sininga kumbukile. Tina tengana cabe mo sobela, sobela.” (I can’t remember. We were just having fun when we ended up living together).
Ncube sent the gallery clapping when he said he still wants Chalwe back in his life as they have not had sex for four months now.
