Being Jailed Isn’t The End Of The World But A Learning Period -Kanene

Singer General Kenene says prison authorities are allowing him to record a new album outside jail because they know he is a celebrity.
And Kanene, whose real names are Clifford Dimba, says being jailed is not the end of the world but instead a learning period. Kanene, who was speaking during the donation of some foodstuffs to Chimbokaila Central Prison by various musicians on Christmas Day, said he is currently working on an album that was meant to give people an insight into prison life. Zambia Association of Musicians president Njoya Tembo, Maiko Zulu, Jonto, Peace Preachers and actress Zodwa Khumalo were among the artistes present during the donation. “Right now, I am writing songs for my album because I want to release an album titled ‘General Kanene in prison’. I have already recorded three and I have even featured Petersen on one of the tracks.
With the songs I am recording, I want to sensitise people about prison so that they have an insight into what happens here. With the support of the prison, I am able to record my music at Jerry Fingers Studio. Since I am a celebrity, can I surely run away?” asked Kanene as he burst into laughter. “Most prisoners are stigmatised when they come out of jail and people even get scared to get close to them because they fear that they will be robbed. The prison then and the prison now are different. The prisoners of today even have classes.
People learn from grade 1 to 12 and some even go up to university level and get degrees [in prison].” Earlier this year, the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court found Kanene guilty of defilement. He was later sentenced to 18 years imprisonment by the Lusaka High Court. “It is easier to get help when you have representation because when I was in court, the only organisations present were NGOs who mostly were against me and I felt alone, but at least if you have support from your fellow artistes. Every person needs representation, even from church or work.
It is easier to get help because you have people backing you,” said Kanene. And actor Owas Mwape, who was recently jailed for forgery and uttering of false documents, seemed perplexed and out of place but thanked the artistes for their gesture.
And Petersen has written an open letter to acting President Dr Guy Scott to consider extending his prerogative of mercy to Kanene, saying he too is human like George Mpombo and Steven Masumba, who were released on Christmas Day. Petersen stated that Kanene’s family was languishing in poverty following the musician’s incarceration.
“I would like to register to your attention that apart from the political fraternity, we as musicians have a brother inside whom I personally believe contributed positively to the country by educating and sensitising morality in Zambian life,” stated Petersen in his brief letter.

    Dear HON EDGAR C. LUNGU: PF PRESIDENT;

EXTENSION OF THE SCHOOL HOLIDAY FOR 2 WEEKS

ATTENTION: EMMANUEL MWAMBA: PF MEDIA TEAM DIRECTOR
On behalf of all Teacher Mother Bodies & Pupils in Zambia, we are asking you to consider using your influence to reschedule the 2015 Term One Reopening Time Table for Government Schools to reduce Syllabus Coverage Disturbance in schools because of the Presidential Elections.

As Senior Academicians and Educationalists, we are suggesting that schools should NOT OPEN on 12th January 2015 but should OPEN on 26th January 2015. This is will allow teachers and pupils to cover the syllabi adequately as they will be no disturbances, because the Elections would have been over by that time.

Allowing schools to open amidst heated Presidential campaigns and elections, will not only disturb the smooth running of the school, but will massively disturb the mood of teaching in schools especially that it will be the first term of the year and this will badly backfire as a lot of pupils in all Grades may perform badly in 2015.

Experience has shown & proved that if the beginning of the term is disturbed, then the whole term will be disturbed and this makes it hard for teachers to cover the syllabus for the respective Grades and Subjects adequately.

And worse still if pupils begin their term at a bad note of disturbances, then expect the whole academic year to be disturbed and this is detrimental to the education system of the country.

Before and during the Presidential Elections, a lot of teachers if not all will be involved in training as Presiding and Polling Assistants and they will also be involved in conducting elections.

This means that during all those days pupils will be left unattended to and this will plant a very bad spirit of laziness in both teachers and pupils which is likely to continue until the end of 2015 and no doubt, this will have a negative effect on the Pupils’ Performance in all grades.

PF, we respect you as a listening government and we wait for a positive response before the Opening Day for Term One 2015 draws near.

Hope our request will be attended as soon as possible and thanks in anticipation.

its good that kanene has learnt his lessons the hard way. even if he is released I feel he will still go on and commit another offence unless he renounces the evils he has committed, much more he needs to cleanse his background because for him to be caught means he had committed hundreds of similar cases. let us not over lobby for him lest we make him big headed.well It is surprising that the prerogative of mercy fell on rich politicians.
