It Is Time For A Tonga To Rule – Munkombwe

SOUTHERN Province Minister Daniel Munkombwe says he has decided to support UPND president Hakainde Hichilema, rejecting the position of Cabinet minister allegedly promised by PF president Edgar Lungu because it was time for the Tonga-speaking people to govern.
Speaking at a mammoth rally in Choma yesterday, Mr. Munkombwe told the residents of Choma that Mr. Lungu sent emissaries to plead for his support in exchange for the position of Cabinet minister if the PF won the election next week.
Mr Munkombwe said other tribes have governed the country and that was time for the people of Southern Province to produce a leader to take over the governance of the country.
“Patriotic Front president Edgar Lungu promised me the position of Cabinet minister if I supported and campaigned for him in Southern Province but I have declined because I am no longer thirst for the position of Cabinet minister anymore,” said Mr. Munkombwe.
Mr. Munkombwe said he would not wait to resign for him to make a decision about who he should support ahead of next week’s presidential election, but that his desire was to guide the people of Zambia on what was best at the moment.

How long has it been since he made that ridiculously infamous statement? Barely 3 years and today he is saying this. Anyway that is what old age can do. Insomnia! !!!!

Mr Munkombwe, if you are going to use tribe as basis for voting for someone, below is the reason why such an approach can’t work:
    (Source ECZ website)
    CENTRAL 483,790 ; COPPERBELT 845,439; EASTERN 600,098; LUAPULA 408,791; LUSAKA 796,687 ; MUCHINGA 269,139 ; NORTHERN 434,478 ; NORTH WESTERN 315,588; SOUTHERN 617,461 ; WESTERN 394,617
    TOTALS 5,166,088
    Let’s say x= 80% of HH’s strongholds. Then x = 0.8x (394,00 West + 617,000 South + 315,000 N/West) = 1,060,000 votes
    Let’s y = 30% of HH’s weakholds then y = 0.3 x (rest of provinces) = 911,700 votes
    Therefore x + y = 1,971,700
Assume MMD, Green Party, FDD, get 15% of national votes then they have 774,900
Assume again PF gets the balance, then PF has 2,419,400.
I have assumed 100% turnout, which of course is not possible. This is a simple illustration to show the folly of relying on strongholds whose total registered voters can be equal to 2 constituencies in Lusaka.
Vote on merit, not tribe or religion or other crap.

      January 15, 2015 at 1:33 pm

Agreed. That looks like the likely outcome. Campaigning on tribe is not needed especially with all these intermarriages!

Some parties say they are full of intelligent people. If they can interpret free stats on voter distribution and apply normal distribution analyses, then they will know where and how to cast their nets. The Zambian voter population concentration is skewed.
Always vote for the right man or woman. any other basis may disappoint you.

The fact that Nyati lists a number of opposition party MPs – serve for GBM who is in National Assembly due to Court Injunction- does not show popularity or best choice, NO. If it is not tribal, then it is personal benefit or just hatred for the popuplar party.
For old man Munkombwe, it is politics of the tummy. Remember what he said during that interview. However, for this one, he has mis-calculated- he will lose with the underfive presido and will mark his political doom. ‘younger man bye bye’. Kwamana mudala.

@Wanyafye Tigers FC , tribe in Zambian politics plays a very important factor(and it will take time to change). Mr Sata used the same method but soon realised that his tribe (Northen,Luapula and his cousins the Easterners) will not be suffucient enough to usher him in state house. He needed the numbers from somewhere also. HH is not only basing his hope on his tribe as you have put it, the people supporting HH are strategic to capture even the so called ‘weakholds’. I like you analysis but bare in mind that regional politics are a major factor in Zambia and you need to use it to the maximum. Every politician is doing that.

    • Wanyafye Tigers FC Reply

      January 14, 2015 at 12:41 pm

Agreed, one must think beyond region and tribe. Sata unlearned that and eventually won by appealing to all regions and tribes.

I can never vote for a Party whose Presidency is decided on the basis of tribe-finish. That’s the more reason UPND cannot win as Zambians have not forgotten. All these characters who are endorsing HH are doing it out of bitterness as UPND requires a lot to clean itself up. May be its time they installed a non Tonga as President for the Party

Zambians that still discriminate against each other based on tribe are living in the stone age. I swear, a normal Zambian in this day and age MUST be connected somehow to another tribe by means of inter-marriage somewhere in the extended family. For example, Kakolwe has a Tonga chick lol

The reason i will never vote for HH is because, i can smile his hatred for bemba people from far, just like you! even where bemba is not involved u have to include us. We are peace loving Zambians who relate with any tribe, thats a known fact!

if people have been comfortable voting for a bemba or an easterner its because of their nature to be welcoming to anyone regardless of who u are! I am not saying all tongas or lozi people are triblist but the majority are!
