A TEAM of the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), Forestry Department and police in Eastern Province has arrested 20 Malawians for alleged possession of 133 logs of Mukula tree.
And the DEC in Lusaka has arrested a 42-year-old businesswoman of Chilenje township for allegedly trafficking in cocaine.
DEC public relations officer Theresa Katongo said the first 12 suspects were intercepted and apprehended on a Fuso truck laden with 79 logs of the Mukula tree while the rest were arrested on another Fuso truck ferrying 54 logs of illegally logged timber.
“The suspects were intercepted in Kapongolo area in Lundazi enroute to Malawi,” Ms Katongo said.
She said DEC has seized the two trucks used in allegedly committing the offence.
And the DEC in Lusaka has arrested businesswoman of Chilenje for allegedly trafficking in cocaine.
Ms Katongo said Florence Machanda, 42, of Chilenje has been arrested for trafficking in 18.8 grammes of cocaine.
She said Machanda was on the DEC watch list for a long time for allegedly supplying cocaine to members of the public in Kabwata.
“She was apprehended from her bar in Kabwata,” Ms Katongo said.
In a related development, the DEC has arrested and jointly charged Ernest Chongo, 19, a footballer of house number 21/10 John Laing and Shadreck Ngosa, 27, a bus conductor of house number 3 Chinsali Road in Chilenje for allegedly trafficking in 22 sachets of cocaine.
Ms Katongo said the suspects were intercepted at a named guest house in Garden township.
She also said the DEC in Lusaka has arrested James Kalwasha, 47, a businessman of Matero township for alleged possession of US$700 counterfeit notes.

Over mukula on 29-11 -14 i was going to Malawi on duty im a truck driver, 2 trucks came with counteners around 13hrs parked next to me i cross to Malawi around 15hrs abt 20km from muchinji border at the checkpont called kamwndo i was ditend from 16hrs 2 midnight a around midnight i so Toyota collora to men came out chating with police sped of after 20min 2 trucks came same which i left at the border Ask police where this trucks going? the going to Mozambique with mukula tree from Zambia .
