Chikwanda Calls For Self-Funding

MINISTER of Finance Alexander Chikwanda has urged Zambians to be agents of national development as the country strives to reduce foreign dependency.
And the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has exceeded last year’s revenue collection by K929.2 million against the targeted K26.7 billion.
Commissioning houses for ZRA staff in Kazungula yesterday, Mr Chikwanda said Zambia’s dependency on foreign aid has reduced to less than four percent of the national budget.
“Zambia is slowly graduating from foreign dependency by ensuring that adequate local revenue is collected by ZRA.
“So far, the dependency on foreign support has reduced to K1.4 billion representing less than four percent of the total national budget,” he said.
Mr Chikwanda said Zambia should generate its own resources instead of depending on foreign support.
He said Government is committed to ensuring that Kazungula is strategic for regional trade by prioritising construction of the bridge across the Zambezi River to link with Botswana.
He said global market economic shocks affect Zambia, hence the need to insulate the country by expanding the agricultural sector and improve exports.
ZRA commissioner-general Berlin Msiska said a motivated workforce will do its best to collect revenue and contribute to national development.
Mr Msiska said last year, ZRA recorded a number of successes due to Government support.
He said the authority has implemented robust information communication technology, business system and an automated system for customs data called ASYCUDA under domestic taxes and customs service.

We should also give advice to government that once revenue is collected by ZRA it should be invested equally I.e.we should see economic development in all parts of the country, particularly Northwestern province.
