When Prophecy Fails: The HH Defeat Syndrome

Leon Festinger’s book, “When Prophecy Fails,” best explains Mr. Hakainde Hichilema’s shameful and unbecoming behavior since he lost the elections. It is telling that HH, the UPND and Zambian Watchdog can trust Muvi TV and a self-proclaimed prophet from Malawi, but not the election results, which his own party and the entire world verified, and certified to be free and fair. HH may lie to himself but the truth remains – on January 20, 2015, he lost the election to Edgar Lungu. Yet, it is extremely concerning that Hakainde cannot accept the will of the people when he is in the opposition—raising questions as to how he would behave when he is in Plot One, and holding power over the military, and all the law enforcement agencies. HH has not just lost the election, but he is losing the respect and credentials of a democratic leader.
HH is suffering from a cognitive dissonance. He had many false prophets on his side— most of them driven by self-interests. He is shocked that he lost the easiest election in Zambian history. Both the PF and the MMD, who were the serious contenders, were in indescribable disarray and the U.P.N.D was intact. He spent millions of dollars and added the majority of the MMD MPs and some PF MPs such as GBM and Masebo to his list. He began his campaign just after the death of President Sata—long before the MMD and the PF had their candidates. On January 20, HH was highly rewarded—he got the majority of the MMD votes—but still lost to a political party that was in ultimate confusion, and had less than 30 days to campaign. If he could not win the 2015 elections, his chances of winning the 2016 general elections exist only in the HH—U.P.N.D dream world. In line with Festinger’s theory, HH and his followers can only remain sober by claiming victory, when in fact they lost!
Despite what cadres want to believe, the U.P.N.D is a small party—in the 2011 elections the party got less than 26 MPs—16 of them from Southern Province. If HH wants to become the president, he needs the numbers—which currently he does not have. The confusion in the PF and the MMD provided him with a golden opportunity – alas he lost.
It seems HH is in extreme shock, and believes he won the election. If so, could this be suggestive of his current mental state? Could it be that the man is crying for help? Or could it be that rich individuals are usually paranoid, and don’t accept defeat since they feel entitled to the outcome of any election? I have called HH the “Mitt Romney” of Zambian politics for this very reason. The man made his fortune from liquidating companies – creating misery for many miners and retrenched parastatal workers, while pocketing millions of dollars. That is how capitalism works, and I fully agree. But being a successful businessman does not always qualify one for the Presidency. One can build a business alone, but nobody builds a political career without the people.
I have respect for HH and I believe he loves Zambia. Unless he is sick or paranoid, HH is slowly revealing his real character. Besides, HH’s Plot One prospects are destroyed by his own followers – who are constantly defining his leadership on tribal lines. Each election year—he gets almost 100% of the Tonga vote. As elections are announced—the nation is alerted to the fact that the U.P.N.D. is a tribal party. Had HH won this election, it could have re-launched him as a nation figure. Lungu killed his dreams—something Hichilema refuses to acknowledge.
Is HH under great pressure not to contest the 2016 elections as the U.P.N.D candidate or is he slowly losing it? Regardless, HH may be suffering from a cognitive dissonance—but one wonders whether he is good for the development of democracy in our nation.

The article has just hammered the nail on its head, this is the reality of what happened before, during and after elections. All what others have been saying mostly kusabaila fye mwata. HH for sure thought had taken advantage of the internal party confusions in PF and MMD.Despite ukwamba bwangu ka race balisomoka ulubilo talulapwa, bena ati na winner. Bola panshi tata ba hihi.

Idiots can you please leave HH alone. I am a die hard PF supporter but I think talking about HH and the UPND only shows how foolish we are because we already won the election and UPND lost it. Why continue wasting time and energy about the past? Please guys grow up and stop behaving like children. These things will not take us anywhere. Can we start campaigning and stop this silly talks about HH. He will start campaigning while we remain talking nonsense.

The problem is that HH declared himself a winner days before votes were cast, he thought he had out numbered all the opponents. He should take heart so that he does not lose the respect and polarity he has gained. God’s time is the Best.

The only problem we hav in zambia is iliteracy ,ignorance and al those other factors that ar needed for a norma person to mak infomed decision. The absence of these elements in many zambians has led to tribalsm and inability to select leaders based on credility an merit bt basd on unfounded reasons which wil lead this country in total mess..less be reasonable…..(Team HH)

Since when did Lungu become Bemba, why are Bemba’s being mentioned in an election loss of a man who only went there(bemba land) only during campaigning time. They voted for a person they new would bring/maintain peace. If he is rich let him “eat his money” Bemba’s aren’t so hopeless as to be attracted by his money. Guys remember the hey days of MMD, MPs stood in provinces away from were their “indigenous” Provinces. Zambians want a president who has a heart for people. The true colors of a person who is power angry are showing. HH be man enough to accept loss ; Are you still thinking of standing in 2016? You need to change, that hatred in your heart/eyes need to brushed off. You then need to start going to all provinces. I totally agree that he is suffering from a cognitive dissonance.

Kapya Kaoma, you so called man of God I thought you were supposed to preach love, peace and unity but instead you are busy propagating tribalism.

What kind of clergy are you and who are you representing? God, NO! When you open your mouth to speak, you are allowing people to know the real you. YOU SHALL KNOW THEM BY THERE FRUITS. Leave politics for politicians, what do you want to prove?

You are yet to meet the Jesus you preach, you need to have the Damascus experience and you will stop misrepresenting Jesus. Be thou converted.
