Over 600 Kasama Residents Test Positive to Cancer

KASAMA General Hospital has in the last three days screened 5,766 people of cancer of whom 679 tested positive.
Hospital superintendent Elijah Motoloki said people from various parts of the province were screened for various forms of cancer.
Dr Motoloki disclosed this during the commemoration of this year’s World Cancer Day in Kasama.
This year’s commemoration was held under the theme “Cancer not beyond us”.
And Northern Province permanent secretary Hlobotha Nkunika said there is need to raise awareness about cancer so that it can be detected early for treatment.
Mr Nkunika said cancer deaths can be prevented if people are screened early and treated.
He said cancer infections have increased in Zambia, rendering it a public concern.
“Commemorating this day accords us an opportunity to raise and increase awareness about cancer and also to mobilise solutions concerning cancer prevention.
Estimates show that the overall cancer infections in 2012 were 9,953/100,000 and the mortality was 7,521 deaths per 100,000 population,” Mr Nkunika said.
He said Government is committed to improving health delivery services through continuous improvements in equipment that will be able to detect non-communicable diseases such as cancer.
Mr Nkunika said Government is currently improving infrastructure, stock of drug and training of cancer personnel among other interventions to tackle the disease.
“Modern wards are currently being constructed at the University Teaching Hospital and Cancer Diseases Hospital,” Mr Nkunika said.
World Health Organisation country representative Jacob Mufunda said the organisation will continue supporting member states to ensure the disease is eradicated.
He implored cooperating partners to ensure they support developing countries in fighting cancer.
Chief Munkonge of the Bemba- speaking people said there is need for chiefs across the country to encourage their subjects to go for cancer screening.

cancer screening which includes CT scan and the rest need special machines and it takes time just on one patient. Its not possible to properly screen 6000 people in 3 days at one hospital worse off in kasama. unless you can tell who has and who hasnt got cancer just by looking. These figures are not only arlaming but also incorrect

Indeed, this seems far fetched but i am sure you will understand when(if) you are informed that screening tests are usually simple population based tests meant to cater for as many people as possible within a short time.

Please be serious. For some of us that have gone or are going through it, is not a joke. It takes time and indeed a lot of testing for one to confirm. These are dangerous utterances. Please be thorough and sure before going public. Talking from experience Chemotherapy is not something one would want to go through let alone be told it was a mistake. However I would love to join the team and help the awareness in any way I can.

Now am seriously wondering why everything has gone viral. Cancer or HIV indeed. My elder sister died of cancer, it took doctors at Ndola Central Hospital two years to confirm the diagnosis. These figures alarming as they are show remarkable improvement in cancer screening that the ” come after six months” we went through. Operations and tumour to sent to lusaka for confirmation. ” Hoorah cancer arrested” I agree with Debbie Mumba for cancer to be positively pronounced we have seen appointments and tests.

600 people in a rural area testing positive for cancer? Cancer is associated with urban living: chemicals from industries, foods with GMO and chemical fed crops, meat from animals fed with chemicals. Kasama should have2 or three people with cancers. UNZA do an investigation. Research on what could have caused this. Is there a company in Kasama that could have brought this scourge upon the people? Cases such as this are whay we were born with intellect. Lets find the cause of this
