Inmates at Isoka State prison in Isoka district in Muchinga province are forced to sleep in shifts every night because the prison has run out of bed space due to overcrowding.
Isoka District Commissioner Major Joe Siwila says the prison is congested forcing inmates such as Remandees and Prohibited Immigrants to sleep in shifts.
Major Siwila described the situation at the Prison as sad saying that in most instances the three cells at the prison meant for about 98 inmates were currently packed with 324 in mates.
He has attributed the congestion to the influx of prohibited immigrants arrested by the Immigrations department at Nakonde border post recently.
Major Siwila adds that the congestion was also due arrests by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) and the Zambia Police Service.

You are correct, that is why i wrote, “those who
are in prison because of sin must repent”,having
at the back of my mind that some who are in prison are not guilty before God,therefore, even
if they die,God will take them to paradise, which is far much better than any place in this
sinful world.

My dear News in Bemba we say “Umulandu mume bakupulafye” Do not think all pipo in Prison are guilty no. Especially that, these are not yet guilty but suspects. Ba Chato wesu (Commissioner of Prisons) please do something. Its not normal. I totally agree with Mundetelele. those with simple cases like smoking Ganja, fighting, should be put on community work. They should be reporting to the DC’s offices every morning.

We are all sinners in one way or another.
We need Jesus more than anything else. To be in prison is not the only way to be bound, many of us walk in the streets but bound even more than a prisoner.

If we know that we are sinners, then we have to
repent before its too late, otherwise, God won`t
spare us, we will be severely punished.
Read John 3:16-20, John 8:32-36 and 1John 3:5-8.
God loves us, by His grace all is possible, what matters is obedience.

What has this congestion got to do with ECL when he has just been in Power for less than a month? Rome was not build in a day, give him time to correct issues. Of course this situation is terrible especially that some inmates have been wrongly convicted or innocent.

Iyee tata Lesa abantu cimofye nokubepaa ifi, I am nearly in tears! This is really bad. Let us do something about this as a nation.
Mr. President, you need to ask the commissioner of prisons to accesswith court officials case by case & allow those caught smoking or selling marijuana in small quantities to plead out & do community service.

Let’s be humane and practical. Why can’t the prison authorities get bunk beds for the time being? Then ask for a new prison also? There are prisons being constructed elsewhere!
