HH: Mealie Meal Price Reduction Is A Joke

In an interview, Mr. Hichilema said steps taken by Government to reduce the wholesale prices of mealie meal by K4 without addressing the causes of high mealie meal prices would not help to maintain the prices of the commodity low. He said although the gesture was welcome, Government should go further and look at the root causes of high prices of mealie meal in the country and address them.
Mr. Hichilema said it was disturbing that despite Zambian farmers producing maize for consumption and selling, the price of the commodity was too high and unaffordable.
“The K4 reduction will have no proper effect on to the poor Zambians whose main staple food value is nshima. Zambians were failing to buy a 25Kg bag of mealie meal when the price was at K50 before it was increased to K65. So even this reduction will have no meaning to the Zambians who are failing to buy because most of them are unemployed and if employed are getting little salaries or slave wages,” said Mr. Hichilema.
He said Government should look at a lasting solutions to the high prices of mealie meal rather than firefighting for solutions.
Mr. Hichilema observed that Government should consider making farming as a profitable business entity with a readily available market not only for maize but also for all other farm produce.
“It is sad that we still import cucumber and water melon from South Africa when we grow our own here in Zambia. This is what Government should promote as a serious way of diversification. Let them give certain incentives to farmers who promote the growth of other crops. This can be done by Government revising the policy to buy out all their produce and this will reduce prices of mealie because people will not depend on mealie meal alone but other farm produce,” said Mr. Hichilema.
On Friday, Agriculture and Livestock Minister Given Lubinda announced a reduction in mealie meal prices with the wholesale price of a 25kg bag of breakfast now to be sold at K61 from K65 while a 25 kg bag of roller meal would now cost K44 from K52.
Mr Lubinda said the reduction of mealie meal prices follows consultations with relevant stakeholders among them the Millers Association of Zambia.

Its True, This Is A Pure Joke. Whats K4? This Is No Different From A Man Selling Mealie Meal At K65 And Give 4 Tomatos As Mbasela. The Reduction Cant Even Take Me To Town And Back. Reduce The Price Such That The Reduction Can Buy Some Families A 1kg Or 2kg Of Meat. You Are Busy Borrowing For Others While You Are Failin To Give Your Problems A First Class Attention. I am told chibuku & kaingo yobila-bila will be costing lower now. That is what HH does not know because we will not depend on nshima alone but chibuku also. The water melons & cucumbers are sweet-courses and currently it is not much a big hurdle to have a sweet-course in Zambia.

HH shud know that zambia is going thru this becoz of what they did with chiluba.those companies they sold including milling plants have contributed to high cost of meal meal. if HH had refused and fougt for mixed economy millers and transporters wud not behave the way they are behaving.mr president establish milling plants in areas where maize is produced

I would like to inform the nation over the announced price of mealie meal by Given Lubinda. I work for a milling company in Lusaka as an accountant in charge of costings. It is is really sad for Given Lubinda to state that he or the PF Government has reduced the price of mealie meal from K65 to K61 for 25kg bag of breakfast fast. If you doubt me on this please you can carry out a price research. The highest whole price for 25kg of breakfast in Lusaka this year has been on K63 by Pembe, the other milling companies are selling from the range of K58 to K61 per 25kg bag. How then does he say that the Government has reduced the whole sale price from K65 to K61 for 25kg bag of breakfast? There is no need of cheating the Zambian people on the price of mealie meal for either person or political gain. To believe this let people go round all milling companies in Zambia and ask whether they are some wholesale reduction in prices for maize meal. If the Government whats to reduce the price of mealie meal, let them subsides the maize from FRA. Regards Concerned Citizen

We are not complaining about the reduction. But rather the lack of information as to how this was achieved. Because we do not want short fixes. We want a sustainable price without uncertainities. Short fixes do not solve a problem. Let them deal with the underline causes and issues.
