Police Clash With UPND Funeral Procession

UPND funeralPolice and UPND cadres clashed today during the funeral procession of UPND member Grayzer Matapa who was killed at the weekend by suspected PF cadres in Lusaka’s Mtendere Township.

This was after Police tried to advise the UPND cadres who were carrying the casket on their shoulders from Ambassador St Annes to put it on a vehicle, a suggestion the cadres rejected sparking the confrontation.

The casket of the late Matapa was damaged in the ensuing fracas after it was dropped after Police fired teargas. A new coffin had to be bought in which to bury the slain UPND member.

The late Matapa has since been put to rest at Leopards Hill Memorial Park. UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema was among the mourners.

And the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) has described the clashes involving Police and UPND cadres carrying the coffin of the late Matapa as a distressing.

YALI Governance Advisor Isaac Mwanza says the police should have read the mood the UPND were in considering that they were mourning.

Mr Mwanza says it does not matter whether the cadres carried the coffin on their shoulders or in a vehicle.

Mr. Mwanza states that it is unfortunate that the Police went ahead and did the unthinkable disrespecting the dead.

He says the move by the Police was provocative and that they should desist from engaging in such taboos in the future.

Mr. Mwanza has since appealed to the Police command to ensure that they do not allow police officers to engage in provocative situations in a bid to promote peace and order in the country.

That is what the Po;ice Command tells the Police rascals. They did the same in Mungu when they killed some youths. They love starting troubles so that they can use the teargas and live bullets/ Ill political trained Police. Marubbish Police who cannot even respect the dead. Even the current Govt. has shown disrespect for the dead keeping their dirty mouths closed. They are cursed and they then will continue doing that even in the near future.

Spot on mate! You have hit the nail on the head. But do not worry, we have 2016 to make a statement and show these useless chaps who really is boss and servant. They will realise in 2016 that leaders are only servants when UPND forms government. Let them enjoy this last year.

Stupid zambia police. Can they please state what law those people were breaking by carrying that coffin on their shoulders. Was it not recently when their own supporters carried a mock coffin to intimidate kabimba? If this was illegal why werent those demonstrators also stopped? A police force that is biased and controlled by the ruling party. This is what you will get under PF. Foolishly their president lungu goes on record at the swearing in ceremony to state that PF cadres were not involved in the fracas that led to this man’s death, even when the case is not concluded. I thought this drunkard was a lawyer. well maybe now we know he was a useless lawyer. Zambia fits the definition of a failed state. The Judiciary is compromised and so is the police force. If these two important institutions cannot act independently it means you are a failed state. Vote UPND to bring about sanity. RIP Matapa

It was most UNPROFESSIONAL, UNTHINKABLE & LACK OfINTELLIGENCE on the part of Tue police officer who gave Tue command to fire the tear gas. Honestly, how do you tear gas a funeral procession? If the UPND members were not in mourning, stupid riots would have ensued & much property would have been lost. So Stella, plz, find out which idiot gave the command to fire and roast his balls. We need tact as we handle Nobel. I hear some cops were clobbered by upnd cadres before replacing Tue casket.

That’s why public order act is important. Those mourners should ‘ve informed police of their programs.
The other problem is HH wanted to capitalise on his political agenda. He was thinking it’s a well attended political rally in pf strong hold and somehow wished it was during election period. Agony is to claim that yu get intelligence info b4 it reaches only to find yourself running away from the police.

So embarrassing. It’s very shocking to note that there are laws for those in power & ordinary citizens. In the recently past, we saw the owners of law carrying a coffin along central business centre in Lusaka demonstrating & agitating for the removal of WK, nothing disgusting & nasty happened. It was justified with those with the reigns of power, today, a similar incidence happens, the police say its a political milage. SHAME ON THE POLICE FORCE & not police service. The world is watching this brutal selective justice.

Public order only when it suits you? How is teargassing funeral mourners proportional to stopping them carrying a coffin on shoulder? Where in the laws of zambia is it illegal for one to carry a coffin on shoulder? One law for those in power and another for those in opposition. That is how the PF government operates. In 2016 let us come out in numbers again and vote these Polluted Pigs out and vote UPND a fair party that will apply laws fairly

Surely, which leaders, in their right mind, punishes their followers to track 17km across Lusaka carrying a casket with the dead in it, when, they have all manner of transportation at their disposal?
BaLibongani nabo! What necessitated the tear gassing of the mourners who thought they were conducting a burial in 1823 & not 2015? UPND were about to conduct what the Luapulans call ‘icitaleme’ & the casket may have landed at plot 1. Thus tear gas!!!
As wrong as it may be to joke over the death of the citizen, so it is to politicize the same death. I demand that, as a citizen, both Mr. E. C. Lungu & Mr. H. Hichilema hold a joint conference and tell their followers to exercise restraint & be civil ij their day-to-day deliberations. We are not at war.

Yes pf carried a casket but was it mourning or did they carry a casket with someone in it? pliz pipo lets first respect the dead then after burial u demonstrate in yo own way. Its good that u were sorted out by the nature of order.

  11. Andy Yosi

    February 28, 2015 at 7:02 am

Which law outlines what mode of transport to use when carrying the dead? Just asking!

    • kakolwe

      February 28, 2015 at 7:16 am

      The law of common sense.
Unless you say it was a traditional ceremony were twenty first century transporters carry their chiefs on their shoulders when Limos are cheaper or those that paddle their huge canoe with an elephant when a yacht can do better & faster..
Besides, imagine that procession reaching central business district or Kamwala! It had the potential to degenerate into serious chaos.
Be that as it may, I still believe tear gassing was NOT the option.

There is no law which prescribes how funerals should be conducted. But carrying a coffin on mourner’s shoulders for a distance of close to 20kilometers is sheer madness today. These mourners became a nuisance to the public and police had to move in to correct or remove these mourners madness using tear-gas and it worked. If you insist on being a publi nuisance, you should relocate to Gaza or Sinazeze.I just hope you still feeling the side-effects of the tear-gas.Love your neighbour as you love yourself bene Mukuni Ngombe.
