UNDER-17 national team players received their allowances on Wednesday night after they were earlier told to go home without pay.
The boys, who had earlier cried foul over FAZ’s decision to send them home without paying them their allowances, were taken by surprise after they were paid around 21:00 hours.
According to a source close to the players, the money was mobilised after word went round that The Post visited the technical centre.
The players, who returned home from the Africa U-17 Championship in Niger on Tuesday, had earlier been told that they would be paid in due course.
The boys were paid K6,000 ($864) from the $940 owed to them while the officials received K10,000 ($1,444).
“Yes, they were paid around 21:00 hours…. They were told that some reporters visited the technical centre and [they] quickly mobilised the money. The technical team will however be paid today (yesterday). The boys were given K6,000 while the officials got K10,000. The first group of boys was given at night and the other today,” said the source.
Football Association of Zambia youth coordinator Lee Kawanu confirmed that the boys and officials were paid.
“They were paid, all officials and players were all sorted out. We could not carry money to Niger because we did not know how far they would go in the tournament, so we were of the view that we pay them when we come back,” said Kawanu.
