PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has expressed concern that paramount chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni and his Chewa counterpart, Gawa Undi, do not visit each other.
And paramount chief Mpezeni’s senior induna, George Zulu, says it is disappointing that opposition political parties shunned the N’cwala traditional ceremony despite being invited.
Speaking in a prerecorded ZNBC Nyanja programme dubbed Thumba la Mwiri in Chipata on Saturday, President Lungu said traditional leaders should unite and promote the national motto of ‘One Zambia, One Nation’.
“Even here (in Eastern Province), I can tell you without shame that I have seen Mpezeni and Gawa Undi do not want to be seen together, to unite or to just be seen together. I know that the previous Gawa Undi and the previous Mpezeni used to visit each other; don’t argue with me, they used to visit each other. Why are these ones who are there not visiting each other? This is a question that I ask myself. Where are we going? So I will be appealing to traditional leaders to take a lead in promoting One Zambia, One Nation,” he said.
President Lungu said he had no problems with any tribe in the country.
“For I don’t face problems; a Chewa is my friend, a Ngoni is my friend and a Nsenga is as well my friend. Why is it that our chiefs do not visit each other these days? This is a question that I am just asking,” he said.
President Lungu said Zambians should realise that they are one and work together.
“No part of this country should be segregated because they didn’t vote for us or maybe because we are not happy with its language or we don’t agree with their traditions. We need to unite, love each other and work together as one country. Even choosing people in an election, let’s not vote for someone on tribal lines, but let’s vote for leaders based on their ability to deliver,” said President Lungu.
The two paramount chiefs were last seen together in Mzimba, Malawi in February 2013, when they attended the funeral of paramount chief M’mbelwa of the Ngoni people of that country.
Meanwhile, Zulu said it was unfair that opposition political party leaders only want to meet paramount chief Mpezeni during campaigns.
Zulu observed that politics were divisive and that the only unifying factors were traditional ceremonies.
He said it was important for political and traditional leaders to attend traditional ceremonies when invited.
Zulu commended traditional leaders from other parts of the country and abroad for attending Saturday’s ceremony.

Development starts from the harmonization of the chiefs who are at the grassroots, so the president is 100% right.

It will affect national development because their subjects will be hostile to one another and they won’t be able work together to implement government programmes.

Lungu is clearly living up to his campaign message of having no vision. At a time when many of the citizens are anxious to know how he will go about the economic misfortunes many people are facing, he is busy acting as mediator between two non influential traditional leaders who are just a figure head for political advancements during election time. Lungu please we are begging you, get your priorities right and get to work. Time is not with you. 2016 is nearby. The people of zambia will judge you by your achievements within this year. PLease let us vote UPND to ensure seriousness when it comes to leadership

If those delegated to do those works are not coming forward and doing anything. Are you now telling us that LUngu’s delegation skills are useless? Keep shooting yourself in the foot mune. A leader is supposed to inform the nation where we are going and what plans he has. Of course he will get his briefings from the cabinet and what not. So why does he always come out in the media to inform us on very irrelevant issues at the current time?

kiki I can see you are upset and angered by constructive comments, ideas and advice. That is why you are losing in 2016. It is because you lack the ability to open your ears, think and make informed decisions based on people’s advice. We in the UPND are going to ensure we are open minded to criticism and advice from all well meaning zambians. Even you, if you become mature and level headed. Those insults will not change or solve the economic hopelessness you chaps have created. you have really created a mess which we will have to deal with from 2016 onwards. However, we do have the capacity to deliver as per hour strong policies and manifesto. Vote UPND mwana

their u go ka educated clearly stating that those chiefs are not an influential factors. simply means they are not important simply means other people are more important than others .it seems animal farm is still at work,Genesis 11:4 talks about the group of people who came together to build a temple that would reach heaven and God saw that they would succeed if they all worked together and he confused there languages..my point is if people work together be it any chiefs or black or white we can achieve anything… nice one Edgar..everyone has a role to play in zambia

Iwe kabiye uko. I do not mix religion and politics mune. Leave religion for your private dealings. Not everyone abides by your beliefs. Now coming to the issue at hand. By those chiefs not being influential I am saying they are not a factor in figuring out or mending the depreciation of the kwacha nor the mining crisis nor the dictatorial tendencies of your president. Learnt to think quick and logically. After all you are in power bane. At this rate you will sink before June. kiki

since Pf has to fix zambia a chief is not important to Pf?edu I’d like saying since Pf is in power I’m not beneficial factor to it…imagine me and my voters card made a difference and put Edgar in power .just because me and my neighbour worked together… now imagine what to chiefs can do..judging someone from their weak point is like putting Ur head in a lions mouth and believe it won’t bite just because its fast asleep and that has been the upnd mentality of thinking other people are not so important because they are Bemba.
