Super Division Napsa Stars striker Elson Mkandawire has died.
Mkandawire and two other passengers died in a road accident around 17:30 hours on Tuesday.
Chililabombwe police officer commanding Grace Kalenga confirmed the accident in an interview yesterday.
“All the three died on the spot after the Toyota Corolla they were travelling in collided with a tanker truck along Kasumbalesa road near Lubengele stream,” Kalenga said.
She named the other two as Daniel Ngosa, 31, and Saidi Lungu, 31, both of Lusaka.
She said the vehicle, which was driven by Mkandawire, was extensively damaged.
Kalenga said the driver of the truck is detained in police custody to help with investigations.
Mkandawire rose to stardom in 2005 when Division One (South) Livingstone Pirates beat Power Dynamos 2-1 in the Mosi Cup quarter-finals.
The same year, Power snatched Mkandawire.
Mkandawire was influential in the Chipolopolo qualification for the inaugural Africa Nations Championship in 2009 in Ivory Coast where Zambia finished third.
He also had stints with Chilanga Heroes, Zesco United, Kabwe Warriors, Zanaco and Konkola Blades.
And Napsa chairperson Ritchie Nawa described Mkandawire’s death as tragic.
“I received a message last night [Tuesday] that Elson was involved in an accident. It’s shocking that such a young man with a lot of potential has died so tragically. We will remember Elson’s moments of brilliance on the pitch.
“Words cannot express the team’s shock at this loss. For sure he will be missed. It is sad to lose such a talented player at the prime of his career. At the moment I don’t have much to say because we are still trying to contact his next of kin,” Nawa said.
Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Kalusha Bwalya said Mkandawire will be remembered for his passion and determination for the game.
“It is an undeniable fact that wherever he went he made an indelible mark as one of the most revered forwards of his generation. His willpower on the pitch made him a fans favourite and is one that the Zambian footballing fraternity will well and truly miss.
“We wish to extend heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and his new club Napsa Stars. We pray that God Almighty strengthens the bereaved family in this difficult period,” said Kalusha in a statement issued yesterday by FAZ communications manager Nkweto Tembwe.

VERY SAD NEWS. IT’S UNFORTUNATE. I URGE ALL ROAD USERS TO FOLLOW SIMPLE ROAD COMMANDMENTS FOR ROAD SAFETY. RUMORS ARE THAT THESE VICTIMS WERE SEEN DRINKING AT A CLUB AND WERE NOW HEADING TO KASUMBALESA FOR FURTHER DRINKING SPREE WHEN THEY MATE THEIR FATE.
DEAR ZAMBIANS,LETS AVOID WHAT IS AVOIDABLE. APART FROM THAT I URGE ALL BELIEVERS IN CHRIST TO PRAY SERIOUSLY AGAINST THESE ACCIDENTS AND POLITICAL VIOLENCE IN THIS GREAT NATION. GOD BLESS ZAMBIA.
