Zambia will in September this year conduct its first ever kidney transplant surgical operation.
This will be made possible through a skills transfer partnership entered into between a United Kingdom based charity Transplant Links Community (TLC) and the University Teaching Hospital (UTH).
Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka today, UTH Managing Director Lackson Kasonka has disclosed that in September alone three kidney transplants are envisaged to be performed.
Dr. Kasonka who was flanked by a delegation team from TCL says the commencement of kidney transplant operations by the UTH will now become part of other already existing programs such cardiac programs which are an effort aimed at enhancing health service provision to the people.
He says UTH considers the commencement of Kidney transplant surgical operations as another independence gift to the Zambian people.
Speaking at the same media briefing Transplants Links Community Chief Executive Officer Jennie Jewitt-Harris indicated that her charity expects to be involved in the country’s kidney transplant program for some time to come.
Dr. Jewitt-Harris says this is in order to ensure that the program develops and is sustainable.
Earlier TCL surgeon Audren Ready expressed optimism that the commencement of kidney transplant operations will open a door for a new hope for Zambians on Dialysis.

UTH has failed in most of its medical operations, many people have died even when it comes to simple operations,id rather go to South,if I needed an operation.

And who is the first victim to get the kidney transfer operation… Hedgar? Ki ki ki Okay seriously UTH has mediocre surgeons, Kidney ops are one of the easy ops to carry and i wouldn’t trust Zambian doctors to operate on my cat.

In as much as it is embarrasing for a country to be carrying out its first kidney operation many years after independence, atleast we are making some progress. We hope this operation will go well and open up opportunity for people to seek such services locally. The past governments of the MMD and PF have clearly failed to improve medical facilities as clearly their priority is on ensuring they gain MPs to consolidate their flimsy grip on power. We in the UPND will ensure improved and modern medical facilities (rehabilitation and building of more clinics and hospitals supported by good technical, research and development capabilities) closer to the people.Vote UPND

Actually it’s unbelievable looking at how many medical doctors Zambia has produced all these years only to start kidney transplant now. But if successful then that will start reducing the long list of dialysis dependants.

If you go to south for any surgical issue the doc who will operate you is a zambian. What we lack in zambia is equipment not not surgeons. If we get more equipments we will be doing anything in the field of health

@New Educated Zambian, can’t you ever make comments minus campaigning for your UPND? Let me quote for you what a diplomat said shortly before this years elections(Zambia Reports 11/01/15): “The problem with UPND, is their media machinery. It behaves like it is selling a detergent soap and not political candidate. And the closest they get to people issues is when the media insults and scandalise opponents. Both scenarios are poor strategy approach. The first one is not personal and people related. The other is offensive to many,” a diplomat stated.
And secondly, the things you’re saying your UPND will do,PF is already delivering…..e.g building of clinics….the PF is currently building 650 health posts. Are you aware that by 2017 will have completed installing dialysis machines in all the hospitals. Are you the only in ‘Jerusalem’ who doesn’t know that by February this year government completed installing 18 anaesthetic machines in all 18 theatres at UTH? Let us learn to give credit where it is due……the PF government has achieved a lot in just three years!
