5 Ways To Give Up Cigarettes For Good

A day ahead of `No Smoking Day’, we arm you with tips on how to step away from ciggies.

With a cheeky glass of wine on a Friday night, or on your lunch break with colleagues, there are plenty of opportunities to light up a cigarette. According to a recent study, it turns out that 70 percent of smokers want to quit but don’t know how to. Most try for a few days and give up within a week, at best.

So if you’re one who has been toying with the idea of ditching the habit, here are a few ways to do it:

1. PICK A DATE AND STICK TO IT

Statistics have shown you’re more likely to succeed when you have a date in mind. So choose a date you’re going to stop smoking, and tell family and friends about it. This way, it’ll be difficult to back out. Studies have also found that quitting can be contagious, and people often do it in groups, so you might be helping others too.

Once you’ve set a date, get rid of everything you use as a smoker, such as lighters and ashtrays. The absence of such things will make smoking a hassle, so there’s less chance of you lighting up.

2. LIST YOUR TRIGGERS

Giving up smoking comes down to psychology and pinpointing what your triggers are – and how to avoid them. It’s recommended you make a note of the times and places you’re either craving or having a cigarette. That way, you can address it. If you tend to smoke after a meal, make sure you do something else after eating. If you smoke when your hands are idle, read a magazine to keep your hands busy. If you smoke while walking to work, consider listening to music or audio books on your way to work. They will keep my mind occupied and you won’t think about smoking.

3. AVOID BOOZE AND COFFEE

Lots of smokers routinely light up when they’re hav ing a drink, or their morn ing coffee. If you’ve devel oped such a pairing, you’ll experience an increased temptation to light up in these situations once you stop smoking. But this is temporary, and once you get used to drinking without smoking, the association and temptation `extinguishes’.

Research suggests that combination of smoking and alcohol can raise your risk of developing mouth cancer by 38 times. This should be a sobering thought to keep you from lighting up.

4. FOCUS ON THE REASON

Health is the most common reason smokers want to stop and you need to know why you want to be a nonsmoker as it will help. For example, if you want to plan a baby and know that this habit could affect your future child’s health, it should be motivation enough to quit.

5. GET MOVING

Most of us are guilty of not being active enough, whether it’s passing up the gym for a night in, or driving to the neighbourhood store instead of walking. But exercise isn’t just good for our bodies, it’s good for turning down those cravings too. There’s strong evidence that doing any sort of physical activity that gets your heart rate up reduces your desire for a cigarette. People often associate smoking with sedentary behaviour, so exercise is a great distraction, especially for those who want to get fit too.

Very wrong advice. Stopping smoking should be a gradual process and not one do by setting up a date to do so. Reason being, your body could react negatively to the shock of stopping smoking abruptly. it is the same with the PF government. It would be a shock to all those dunder heads if HH formed government easily on one trial. However, as you can see this is now gradually coming to reality as UPND has increased its share of votes and closed the gap. Vote UPND

Nevers Wishes Mutinta (Bana HH) A Quick Recovery

MMD sends a message of good will and quick recovery to Bana HH. Zambia being a Christian nation understands the spiritual warfare going on in the nation and trust that with concerted prayer support from all Christians, Zambia shall be saved from those whose intentions contradict God’s will for the nation.
We urge all Zambians to stand together to pray for Bana HH’s healing so that she can continue to provide the necessary sex & massage to his husband HH who is now bonking Maureen in substitute.
Our prayers go out on behalf of the Bana HH, her family and her kitchen.
      Sincerely,
      Nevers Mumba
      MMD President

it is even more worrying if you are a girl as you allege. Because this will mean that even the PF women are classless illiterates without much between their two ears.
