THE Kabwe High Court has sentenced a 23-year-old man of Mumbwa to 20 years imprisonment for beating his girlfriend to death.
Kabwe High Court judge-in-charge Mwiinde Siavwapa jailed Billy Chembe on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter.
The convict was initially facing a charge of murder but it was reduced to manslaughter after the court granted the defence an application to have the charged reduced.
Chembe on March 5, last year, allegedly unlawfully caused the death of Fungai Njobolo.
Facts presented by the state were that on that material day, Chembe found Njobolo standing with a man outside his house and that this angered him.
The court heard that Chembe engaged in a quarrel with Njobolo over the man after which he beat her and left her lying on the road side.
The court further heard that Njobolo was later picked up by well-wishers and took her to the hospital where she later died.
Postmortem results showed that Njobolo died of head injuries inflicted on her.
In mitigation on his behalf, senior Legal Aid Board counsel Kamo Simfukwe said Chembe is a young man who deeply regrets his action that led to the death of Njobolo.
Ms Simfukwe said Chembe is a first offender who, if given a chance, can change to be a better person.
“Chembe has pleaded guilty to the charge without wasting the court time and he pleads with this honourable court to exercise leniency on him,”Ms Simfukwe said.
Mr Justice Siavwapa said cases of gender Based violence are on the raise and perpetrators ought to be brought to book.
“It is not a solution to be physical with your partner. She is not your property and you need to treat her with respect. It is sad that at your age, a young man would act in such a manner,” Mr Justice Siavwapa said.
Mr Justice Siavwapa told Chembe that he had considered his plea of guilty to the charge and sentenced him to 20 years imprisonment.

This is what happens when the pf government is fighting gbv and inequality just on paper and face value. For e.g they think having a female vice president means they have successfully fought inequality. Please vote in the upnd to ensure a localised sensitization programme on gbv and also effective gender equality from the bottom up approach.

JJ you seem frustrated just like the many PF cadres. However, I do not blame you. Even I would be frustrated if I voted in a party that lied to me and ensured that the same mistakes were made. The people you should be upset with are the clueless and visionless leader and surprise surprise the ill leader. How many times will you zambians be lied to? Gender inequality cannot be fought by employing a woman to a high position. You need to deal with the underlying issues at grass root level. And as for your children, with a parent as dumb as you am sure the dull genes they have inherited from you will prevent them from getting educated from any school in this planet.

You can take those dumb kids to the most expensive school on the planet. but if they are as dumb as their PF cadre parent then nothing will change

Uneducted zambian a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.appointing a female vice president is a step in the right direction.change is a gradual process get tht in your thick skull.are you on hh’s payroll? You seem to be one unproductive fellow campaigning day and night on the social media even on topics that have nothing to do with politics.

kiki hey if that puts millions of kwacha in my bank account at the end of the month what is the problem? Look PF cadres, learn to deal with issues objectively. I am giving you points based on my analysis whereas you keep personally attacking me. These are signs that what am saying is hitting home. And come 2016 UPND will hit a home run

Yes it begins with one step from the bottom and not the top. You cannot skip phases and go straight up to employ a female vice president in order to prove or fight inequality. Are the PF saying she was only given that position not becaus ehs eis qualified but because she is a female?

A woman probably is. But it does not make sense to put a woman there for the purposes of showing that you are pro gender equluaity and not on merit. This is because it defeats the initial aim of gender equality. get it young man Dave?
