UNDER-20 national team goalkeepers’ coach Yona Phiri says custodian Mangani Banda will soon be ready to challenge Kennedy Mweene for the Chipolopolo position.
Phiri said in an interview on Friday that Banda has proved his worth at the Africa Youth Championship in Senegal.
The Zanaco custodian, 19, has so far conceded three goals but Phiri said the strikes were difficult to stop.
“You can see that all the goals he [Banda] conceded were difficult ones to stop for any goalkeeper. Overall, I think he has improved a lot and coaches at under-23 and senior national teams should watch out for him,” Phiri said.
He also commended reserve goalkeepers Tresfford Mulenga and Geoffrey Silavwe.
He said the two netminders have been performing well during training and Zambians would have been impressed with them had they been given an opportunity to don national colours.
Meanwhile, Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) executive committee member Jeffrey Chipilingu said the junior Chipolopolo have gained lessons from the tournament in Senegal.
Chipilingu, who is the team’s delegation leader, said the players will not be the same when they return to their respective clubs because the tournament has exposed them to high level competition.
“These are developmental teams and as FAZ we will continue supporting them. We know that it is tournaments like this that help to shape careers of young players. So in much as we are disappointed with the early elimination, we are somehow happy that the players have learnt something that will help them,” he said.
Zambia were eliminated from the tournament after losing 0-1 to Mali and 1-2 to Ghana.

After pleas by the smart pipo of Zambia to change my blogging conduct I have now decided to contribute positively to our beautiful country.FYI I was just hired by UPND to smear campaign & deliberately discredit the PF government to ruin their public reputation. In fact prior to Jan 2015 polls Muvi TV was given K2.5 million rebased to promote political propaganda against the PF Party to manipulate & influence opinions in favour of UPND!NDINE CHABE CHPUBA!!!

Very useless goal stopper! Fool allowed 5 goals in a single match. He’s embarrassing the national team and his coach should just shut up if has nothing better to say during interviews.

Interesting. Coach, Yona Phiri. Goalkeeper being praised, Mangani Banda-Both easterners! Mweene to be replaced- Southerner! I hope politics haven’t crossed over to football. Anyway he has mentioned Mulenga and Silavwe. Kikiki.
