Mmembe: Zambians Should Prepare for the Worst With Lungu

It was easy for Edgar Lungu and his friends to manipulate their way into power. But it doesn’t seem that easy for them to run the country.

Everything seems to be in disequilibrium. It is not only Edgar’s health that is in a poor state. The economy of the country is getting on its knees. Everything seems to be at a standstill or heading backwards in very long strides.

The kwacha is down to K7.40 to the United States dollar. The consequences of all this for a country that has to import almost all its inputs are not difficult to discern.

This will mean an instant increase in the cost of production of goods and services, pushing the cost of living higher and higher.

There is a fuel shortage that no one is able to explain properly. Time for work is being shortened through long queues for fuel.

Most of the construction works that were going on before Michael Sata’s death have almost come to a standstill. In many places, contractors have moved out their equipment. This is all because they have not been paid. And no one is explaining what is going on with these projects and why they have stopped. Nothing in the economy and in the country in general seems to be working.

The question is: where is the country headed under this leadership?

For five months, the government has not been functioning as a government. We have lost almost half a year. No one can account for these lost months.

Edgar has spent almost two months doing nothing apart from the few appointments here and there and the mock engagement with the Director of Public Prosecutions.

All he has been busy with is paying his political debts to Rupiah Banda – appointing Rupiah’s people to positions in government, trying to sort out people standing in the way of Rupiah’s freedom from corruption investigations, vengeance here and there. Other than that, there is nothing that Edgar and his friends have been doing. And there is no clear direction as to where they are headed. When a government runs without a clear direction, it’s a sign of worse things to come.

But amid all this, Edgar and his team are spending public funds on themselves. It is costing the taxpayer a lot of money to look after Edgar’s health. But what is the taxpayer getting in return?

The Zambian people are starting to see and understand what is going on and they don’t seem to like what they are seeing. The irritation is growing and doesn’t seem to be momentary. It is not usual for a ruling party, a political party that has just won an election, to be losing so many members to a nascent opposition political party. Every day, the Patriotic Front is losing members to Rainbow. The normal thing is for people to leave the opposition and join a political party that has just gotten into power so that they, too, can join the eating. There is something seriously wrong going on. And those in the Patriotic Front and its government should not bury their heads in the sand in the ostrich style and fashion, pretending all is okay; it’s only a few disgruntled elements disturbing their party, their eating, their enjoyment, their newfound fame and glory.

Things are not okay. The economy is in shambles. The government has run out of money. And it’s not even easy for them to continue borrowing. They are quickly reaching the limit of their debt capacity. And moreover, they should not be allowed to continue borrowing recklessly. It is not them who are going to pay that debt. It is the future generations that will be lumbered with all debt obligations they are contracting today; it is the future consumption and well-being of our people that are being sacrificed.

And now they have too many problems to attend to: they have an ill President with very limited leadership capacities and who is totally empty on many issues concerning the running of the economy and the politics of the country. They also have a totally disorganised ruling party full of opportunists and all sorts of corrupt elements. This is not a recipe for governing well. They are headed for disaster. But the unfortunate thing is that it is not only them who will be affected by all this. The ordinary Zambians will be the ones to bear the brunt of all this. By the time they leave, this country will be derailed and it will take a lot of effort to put it back on the rails.

Soon, they will have to start preparing for next year’s elections with a leader who is not well but whose future they cannot figure out with certainty. Squabbles for succession will soon engulf the Patriotic Front.

This is not a government: it’s a joke. And the consequences of having a joke for a government will soon be clear for all to see. Running a government is different from gambling all night long in a casino under the propulsion of alcohol. There is no abracadabra in running government. It’s a process that requires a lot of discipline and effort. And this government doesn’t have that discipline. It also does not have the ability to exert that required effort.

The queues for fuel we are seeing; the excessive depreciation of the kwacha we are witnessing, are just the beginning of worse things to come. The economy is headed for disaster and it’s time the Zambian people start bracing themselves for that.

It is not surprising that we are in this state because Edgar openly and repeatedly told the nation that he had no vision of his own for this country. He said he will only be there to carry out Michael’s vision. But how much of Michael’s vision did Edgar understand? How close was Edgar to the formulation of Patriotic Front policies during Michael’s life? What was Edgar’s contribution to the Patriotic Front manifesto? Does Edgar even understand who drafted or contributed to that manifesto?

An important question we should all answer is this: how did a man who consistently professed to have no vision for the country end up as President of our Republic?

M’membe shouldn’t just criticize, provide solutions as patriotic Zambians. The falling of the currencies is every where, it’s not zambia only, even the second biggest economy in Africa is in shambles. For first time in 13yrs, the rand is trading above R12.40 to a dollar. Look at Botswana pula, oil price, gold, platinum etc. The economy will rise again. M’membe should either shut up or give solution

M’Membe, please start by repaying the K14billion that you and your friend Mutembo Nchito owes the Zambians so that institutions not being funded now can get funded. When Sata was clearly very sick, you kept on lying to Zambians and never even asked how much money Zambians were spending on his treatment. What is your problem now that EL is incharge?

Can you stop heaping your blames on an innocent man. Kwacha is weakening yes. Find out about RSA Rand which is down by 25%. Our problems are not just happening in Zambia but so many other countries. It seems global crunch is approaching.

yes the Government needs to do something to reduce import and increase exports. Only a fool would think Lungu would do all that in the two months he has served.

It requires infrastructure development in the manufacturing sector for the country to reduce on imports. Raw materials are readily available but there is no processing capacity for most goods. Tell me that capacity would be built by your rainbow party in two months??

    Cheap political mileage!

    • Mkhonto Wesizwe

      March 18, 2015 at 4:39 pm

Kwacha is weakening, you are right. But if you really an economist and you look at your country and the world through the door and not a key hole, you would have first checked what is happening on the world market before condemning an innocent person. You see, the Dollar has strengthened, American stock has fallen. Currencies weaker than the Dollar automatically have weakened. The only best thing to do in this situation is to increase our non traditional exports because our prices will then be competitive.

Any politician who would have been in power now and not just in zambia would face the same in light of a strengthening Dollar. Check JSE and the Rand and other currencies, including Pulla. Hope you have gotten some sense.

Mmembe, is this the way to promote your political party Rainbow. Remember, Kabimba was a part in plunging the economy to where it is today.. edgar just inherited the problems started by the rainbow leader and he is working to solve them, he just been in for 2 months for crying out loud. So shut up and cry the “Carte” is being hammered. we zambians are very glad that your “cartel” is being fixed. and we happy with HE ECL.

      4.Good policies

And its not only the economy which is on its knees even the Cartel is on its knees shiting in their pants! How can the economy do better when this i.d.i.o.t Mmembe and his homosexual cartel have failed to pay back the loan and evade tax? Only a fool will agree with this f.o.o.l who always want to dupe Zambians as a messair each time there is a looming election! This is the problem when one thinks he is the most educated and intelligent man in the country, no more opinion to make because Kabimba is a failed project and you are to ashamed to support hh save for the insult you gave him during your pick days. May be try to build Mpombo or Mulongoti they can do better if they put Fr Luonde candidate and John Mambo as a running mate!

It is very true what this article is saying. Since lungu took over it has been ne negative thing after the next. Now we are at the increase in price of dstv. This is in addition to all the other issues we are facing. Next will be queuing up for bread and other basic needs. Please vote UPND. Lungu and gang have failed you

    • Ndaje Kahks

      March 17, 2015 at 1:18 pm

Iwe what is DSTv. This is just a luxury you can do without. This not the first increment, There was one in Mwanwasas time and the competitor Go TV was suffocated by Multichoice with the help of Ronnie Shikapwasha. Next you will tell us that someone has become impotent because of Lungu. Things will get worse because Kabimba has planted a lot of rotten eggs in the system.

      • New Educated Zambia©

        March 17, 2015 at 1:21 pm

The issue is not about whether or not we can do without DSTV. I think every sensible man knows that one cannot die because he cannot watch DSTV. However, if you had brains you would realise that the issue has more to do with what is the cause or rather reason for this price increase. This increase in most goods and services go to show that the econonmy is headed for a depression. Good luck PF is all I can say. 2016 let us vote in a party for the people

        • Ndaje Kahks

          March 17, 2015 at 1:33 pm

By the way Mr Educated, do you know that you are also contributing to the weak Kawcha? Paying for DSTV means that money will be changed into forex and sent to SA. The salaula Toyotas you are buying in thousands are bought using our scarce forex. Sacrifice these and you will have played your part instead of talking politics all the time

            March 17, 2015 at 3:02 pm

@Ndaje Kahks, no wonder NEZ once laughed at your friend Chief of Griefs or whatever his name is for answering to his own postings…this seems to be the norm among PF Cadres…kikikiki… Now listen and listen good… NEZ is neither a politician nor is he a decision maker in Government. He can only go as far as commenting on what is happening in the country. If he decides to support UPND, that does not mean he is Tonga. I support HH and I am not tonga. And even if he was tonga, so what? The fact still remains HH is the best candidate so far. Your comment clearly show that you vote on tribal grounds and yet you are quick to point fingers at others. Let us be objective for once. The fact of the matter is that the country is in a mess as at now. Things are not good at all. Lungu may be in power for just a few months (as some of you are busy justifying), but a new broom is supposed to sweep cleaner than an old one. Even when you marry a new wife, a few months down the line is the time she is suppose to impresses the husband the most. But contrary to your kachasu president; No sooner did he get into power than off he went on a splee! (holiday). Just when we thought he was back in office and would start working, the next thing we hear is that he is in SA sick and his CD4 count very low coz he doesn’t take ARVs regularly. The guy prefers beer to ARVs. We have had enough of this circus. These guys need to be flushed out and VERY FAST before the country is messed up beyond repair.

My concern is not with how mmembe personally makes his money or what he eats for breakfast. Facts are he is an internationally awarded journalist. No one is forcing you to read his paper. Matter of fact, if he owes zambian citizens money as you put it then you have a right to actually legally pursue him in your capacity as a zambian citizen if you feel so affected.

Because you UPND do not have ANY stategy by which you can woo PF fools and illiterates to your party. How can you? Y is it difficult for u pf chaps to think, r u telling me this ka fuel issue + ka kwacha r bigger than the entire pf? Iyi yena yamikulila ba pf ! Bafilwa abo ba paka fyonaule(pf)

So whay is wrong with what Mmembe has written. This is constructive criticism. If I were Edgar and PF Iwould take note and find a way of correcting or changing what Mmembe calls negatives into positives. That way they effectively prepare for next elections. Period.

u a rit my bro ,all tribes have seen that HH means well for this country but these PF thieves with relative saving in this current government are the one in support of this RB/ECL party who are stealing from us de poor Zambians.HH managed to win the hearts of us bembas, lundas, luvales, tongas, lozis, kaondes & nyanjas which he never had some previous elections.can’t u see his team of mutatis,GBM,morreen etc are intact in support of HH.they know very well that come 2016 HH will do kolopa in all provinces because we are feeling to pain of the suffering under lungu and his relative rb with their bad economy.

Talk about childish reasoning. Would it that you people where not fickle!! You’d not be sawyed by the likes of Mmembe. Go through the history of the the Weekly Post to The Post, you’ll find headlines like Kaunda is a thief, Kaunda stateless, Chiluba is a thief, Kafupi is Zairean, Mwanawasa U-turns, Sata can never rule, Hakainde, the chameleon, Tribalist HH, Lungu is a hooligan, etc. And this is a person you worship?
Such are people who see ‘bad’ in a person when it suits them.

It is called freedom of speech. And you as a zambian citizen have a freedom to decide whether to take those few kwachas out of your worn out trouser and buy the post. Or read the headlines through the window of the bus while u travel to work and save your few kwachas. or better still shut your eyes whenever you come across the post and instead settle for daily mail or times

Imwe muli cikopo & poor at analysis. Who is talking about freedom of speech or the buying of the post. Iyeee uluse!
Yes we are free to speak. Yes! In the abundance of all our utterances, we show who we are. Either wise or not. My point is can you rely on the utterances of a fickle person. Its your freedom of choice, but when he turns against you tomorrow, cry not to US. You were warned.

I remember the insults which were posted when someone talked about MMD and not many moons ago. where are they? in the end its the voters to decide and not the insult at someone who is just stating the obvious. These things are not secrets. we are seeing them and tolerating them, but for how long. The government appears to be clueless, running around like headless chickens.

Regardless of what mm’mbe says UPND will never rule this nation under your current president. The same applies to Kabimba, even when he was SG in PF people hated him within the party and in the opposition. Where can he get support now after been fired from PF? If i were to make comparisons between HH and Winter Kabimba, then HH is far better.

Looking at the comments above, i wonder what would happen to some PF supporters if HH were to win the elections. Some of them would just die and cease to exist. They would die with depression.

We would embrace them as they are citizens of zambia. One zambia one nation. we shall all move forward together once UPND forms government in 2016

I just appreciate the fact that there are those that may be going through that patch of life. By the way, if anyone uses the post for tissue, chances are that balombelefye paper. Coz no one can by it as a shinda paper for it is more expensive than that shinda paper.
