A MAN of Ndola’s Kantolomba township has been sentenced to four years imprisonment with hard labour by the Ndola Magistrate’s Court for pouring hot water on his wife and brother-in-law.
Richard Sakala, 42, burnt his wife and her brother-in-law following a scuffle.
Magistrate Eston kafunyi on Tuesday convicted Sakala after he pleaded guilty to two counts of assault.
Particular of the offence are that Sakala, on February 22 this year, in Ndola, allegedly assaulted Given Lupupa and Kenton Lupupa.
“I have taken note that you are a first offender who deserves leniency. However, your actions were unreasonable. The burns the two complainants sustained were very serious. I hereby sentence you to two years imprisonment with hard labour in each count. The sentences are to run concurrently,” Mr Kafunyi said.
In mitigation, Sakala pleaded with the court to be lenient on him as he was remorseful for his actions.
Facts before court were that on the material day around 18.00 hours, Sakala met Lupupa at Mushili market and asked him if he could be escorted to his wife’s house as the two were on separation.
Lupupa agreed to his brother-in-law’s request.
The court heard that whilst in the wife’s house, Sakala pleaded for forgiveness and at that point, the brother in law out of the house.
While outside, he heard noise from the house and when he rushed inside, he found Sakala beating his wife.
The court heard that when Lupupa tried to stop the fight, Sakala got a pot of boiling water from the brazier and poured it on his wife and later on Lupupa.
Both complainants sustained burns on their chests.
The matter was reported to Mushili police post and Sakala was apprehended in connection with the offence.

Indeed a very sad case and state of affairs. GBV really needs to be addressed in this country of ours. It is not a lie that cases of such a nature are on the rise. It is important to note that GBV has been found to be more common in areas that have lower standards of living, high illiteracy rates and higher poverty levels. We in the UPND therefore call upon the UPND to tackle these three factors in order to tackle the issue at hand. The UPND has alot of ideas and solutions which could help the country reduce this scourge. A scourge that is indirectly linked to PF’s lack of priority to fighting poverty and its associated ill effects. Please engage us and vote UPND in 2016.Forward
