HE WHO LIVES IN A GLASS HOUSE SHOULD NOT THROW STONES
Dear editor,
I would like to thank you for allowing my piece of writing in your publication. Before this issue of the Jobless6 and Stella Sata goes in to the archives, may I also say a few words. Some people of course may be injured by it, but in all intent it just a reminder and advice to the learned colleagues.
The media, both international and local has captured one of the president’s daughters to have attacked the intelligence of the learned jobless colleagues. Her statement was received with mixed feelings from across the globe. I don’t share the stance she has taken of apologizing because I feel she is right in what she is alleged to have told the jobless6. She probably apologised because she is only trying to live by the old adage HE WHO LIVES IN A GLASS HOUSE SHOULD NOT THROW STONES.
She is protecting herself from attacks by frustrated jobless6 and their sympathisers. More than fifty years of education system in Zambia, but its citizens still believe that only educated people become rich, live comfortably and are the drivers of the economy. This is not true. If anything, for argument’s sake, education is just a tool that helps us understand things better and in a variety of context. You can be educated but lazy, educated but lunatic, educated but not employable.
The Jobless6 and their sympathisers have got a misconception here. They just think that only educated people are the “muscle men” in the economy. I want also to highlight a point that education in Zambia has been mistaken for working in an office. And rightly so that is what is happening. When the jobless6 and their parents embarked on the course of investing in education, they had a picture of controlling a corporation that was started by others or maybe started by the government.
The jobless6 thought they’ll be playing around in the offices on swivel chairs, calling for a cup of coffee at will, chaffing other people’s daughters on phones. They invested heavily thinking they’ll be driving those Porsche cars and sleeping in executive hotels, alas the dream has dawned on them. It surprises me when I see a man with degrees in marketing wanting to be employed when they can use their expertise to generate their own income outside the employment of others.
Mind you, it’s not always that when you invest you have to reap handsomely, though that is everyone’s ultimate goal. The worst should also be expected, ie, no harvest at all. Use your expertise to sell a product produced by others irrespective of the value. Tomato was chosen by Stella because it is the common and well demanded good in Zambia. Do the branding, blending, price discrimination, you learnt at the varsity on a tomato.
But the problem is that you want someone who ended up in grade three or seven to do those things. And you are standing from afar shouting at them “try to package your tomatoes in plastics”, Shame! Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba aka GBM has demonstrated that one can live comfortably even without being schooled! It just calls for self discipline and hardwork, and knowing what you want to achieve in life.
Some people may be saying, where do we get start up capital? Simple, the same source of the resources that took you to the university, shall be the resources you’ll use to start your own business.
Except this time you are not paying for your school but nurturing it to grow. Wealth, whether earned from cleaning a toilet or from working from the executive office is still wealth as long as it is making you live comfortably. What Stella Sata may have lacked in her statement was to advise the jobless6 on how, where, when to sell the tomatoes.
And probably the tomato could metaphorically mean any inferior but very important economic goods. In other words she just means do something outside formal employment.
Like Robert Kiyosaki said, by advising your kids to go to school, get good grades so that you can be employed by the well paying employer. He says we are living by an old outdated set of rules. They are dangerous to live by them in this time and age. Lets be creative, innovative and productive.

What a fact statment full of good analysis about Zambian Education. I totally agree with you Mbuya wanga. Most people fell you get any further cerficate be it a degree apart from a G-12 certificate, then life must be smooth all around them. Let me confess before my fellow blogers that am one of those who was thinking in that line when i got my higher Educatation qualification. But alas! life took me somewhere i never even expected, reduced to cleaning and sweeping a puplic place and i became a laughing stock to most if not all of my friends. However, i thank God that am one of the head of department in Eastern province holding a high respectable public office and all those who used to laugh at me are coming for help in different angles. Life and my higher Education reduced me to nothing until i started thinking i should start from the scratch using the skill i learnt from school. What a hard lesson i learn but here i am, all the past is forgotten. Stella you were very right and you hold no applogy to anyone.

The problem with our so called graduates is that they think because they have a piece of paper then everything should be handed to them on a silver platter. Zambian youths should pick a leaf from the Indian Zambia (.ba mwenye) when was the last time u saw a mwenye moving around with his degree looking for a job? Gentle people,
you may be complaining but the young lady Stella has helped someone out there. Think critically. This is not about PF or UPND or FDD, this is about life or death.
Open your eyes and see what is happening around the globe to which Zambia is a part. I totally blame our education system for inculcating the wrong notion that graduates are meant for white collar jobs only.
You can blame governments, change govts the fact is no one will create jobs overnite, not at all.If you are considering jobs in the mines, this is not sustainable due the volatility of the copper market. ultimately we need to diversify into agric and tourism and how do you do that-provide incentives to the rural areas eg through infrastructure which i believe PF has embarked on and how long will this take while you wait for jobs.
Selling tomatoes, should not be taken literally. It means humble beginnings. even in selling tomatoes a graduate can add value by properly packaging the product and can penetrate markets which someone who is not educated may not, can be more creative and innovative and thus grow business. Guys we know of people in this country who left varsity in 3rd or 2rd yr voluntarily to go and pursue farming business and are doing very well. You might even want to change govts but this will not help in the short term, no one should cheat you that is just rhetoric my dear colleagues.
Think outside the box, all you need is to push for access to affordable or cheaper capital, conducive environment for SMEs etc.
The weakening of the Kwacha is supposed to be a blessings to an exporting nation, but because you are consumption based you keep complaining. By importing cars from japan you are exporting jobs. if you can start selling tomatoes you create jobs period.
IF this comment came from a pastor or any other, you could have easily believed but because she is daughter to former president you want to mix issues and thus miss the point.

To use education is not only dependant on skills and good business but liquid cash to buy that equipment needed to turn guavas to jam, the cups or plastics for packing. We should promote environment for borrowing for start ups if we are to get rid of unemployment. then the other thing is why cant people who have worked before step out their jobs to start their own businesses or atleast be compelled to retire early? They need money so do fresh graduates. Let us be objective

This is an interesting story from Mr Agripa Mwanza. Adding salt to the wound Stella Sata has caused.
As regards education and the educated, and their failure to find a suitable job for themselves, I think the so called Jobless6 are missing a point here. As rightly articulated by the author, education should not be taken like a weapon to amass wealth upon self. It must be a vehicle to help create wealth for our communities and ourselves.
In my understanding of a graduate, I think is someone who has been prepared to provide economic solutions to a society in which they are located. Take for example, a carpenter graduate. Should such a potential employee cry the loudest for not being employed by the government? Colleagues, we must be serious with what we demand. Lets not be used by politicians.

Stella, you are correct to advise the graduates to find something else to do to earn themselves the Kwacha. They ought to know better that Nature isn’t perfect. Some may take medication and get well while others die. Even the most educated might be beyond what most companies want and end up jobless. And to crown it up, sponsored demos are sign of NO confidence in one self. Instead the sponsor should have mentored the chaps on how they can organize them selves to access the youth empowerment funds which end up just sustaining the banks, where the monies are kept.
