President Lungu Clinches Deal With Huawei
PRESIDENT Lungu has facilitated the signing of two memorandums of understanding (MoU) with Huawei Technologies Company Limited for the construction of communication towers in rural areas and off-grid power plants.
Government also signed an MoU with Huawei to train 10 Zambian students in information communication technologies (ICTs).
Ministry of Transport, Works, Supply and Communications permanent secretary Charles Sipanje signed the first MoU on ICT training for Zambia while Zesco managing director Victor Mundende signed the one on the construction of communication towers and off-grid power plants.
Huawei Technologies Zambia Limited managing director Fan Wen signed for his company.
Speaking during the signing ceremony here yesterday, Huawei International Zambia solutions manager Thandizo Banda said Huawei is aware that Zambia needs technical skills for economic development.
“The intent of the MoU is to train the students for them to be able to train other Zambians,” Mr Banda said.
Earlier, President Lungu held a bilateral meeting with Huawei vice-president Dafeng Li.
“It gives me a lot of pleasure to have a chance to meet you in your home town Shenzhen. This is the ICT centre of the world and that is why you are here because you are the leaders in that area,” Mr Lungu said.
He urged Huawei to provide skills to Zambians so that they can own the projects that the company is undertaking in Zambia.
“I know you are very secretive about trade secrets and that goes naturally. But as your partners, we should be allowed certain knowledge to operate independently.
“There are some contracts you are executing for our people, which I must bring
to your attention which are dissatisfactory, going by the nature of complaints Zambians have echoed through their elected representatives in Parliament. In this regard,
I am talking about communication towers,” Mr Lungu said.
And Mr Dafeng said Huawei recorded profits amounting to US$46 billion, making it the best ICT company in the world.
Mr Lungu later met ZTE Corporation chairman Hou Weigui and Jilin Province director-general Cong Hongxia.
Mr Lungu told Mr Cong that Zambia heavily depends on agriculture.
“Most Zambians actually earn their living off the land, particularly in rural areas. Those constitute a very critical component of our people. They are the masses and
most of them are peasant farmers. We have an inescapable duty as leaders to look after them and we can only improve their lives if we train them in improved farming methods and value addition to their products through agro-processing,” President Lungu said.
The President also held talks with Communist Party of China (CPC) Shenzhen Municipal Committee secretary Ma Xingrui.
Mr Lungu congratulated Mr Ma on his election.
President Lungu said he is privileged to be the first one from outside China to call on Mr Ma since his election barely a week ago.
“You have spoken elaborately about the history and development of Shenzhen, the insight will enable me and my ministers plan in what areas we want to engage in,” Mr Lungu said.
He said Zambia and China have been great friends for over 50 years.
The President also thanked the Chinese government for sending a high-level delegation to Zambia during the golden jubilee independence anniversary celebrations in October last year.
He also reiterated that Zambia is now emphasising public-private partnerships so that the people can also participate in the economic development of the country.

yesterday i was in kafue District were we had a meeting with the grassroot,28 UPND members resigned and joined the PF,5 MMD officials and 6 UNIP officials joined the PF.

iyo kwena mwalisulwa, the president of a Republic been summoned by a bunch of corporate executives, it should hav been the other way round, him summoning them to come to Zambia, now he has been reduced to a mere facilitator, work that even a cadre from intercity can do. By their fruits you shall know them. I get concerned when people brag about being educated, that their political party is better because the members have been to while those of the other party or parties are dull/rifraffs. Intelligent and educated people do not treat each other like that(demeaning each other). intelligent people are tolerant of all views. One day in a lecture, the lecturer asked us a question as to who was ruling this country (Zambia). We gave all sorts of answers alas we were all wrong. He gave us an answer in the end, albeit a sad one, “the illiterates”. The so called uneducated. They are in majority at this stage of Zambia’s development and they are the ones who vote. Hence that answer by that lecturer. So, I get gravely concerned when I get to see my fellow bloggers at each other via insults. We should attack ideas. Discuss ideas. Be loyal to the Country and its development and not to PF, UNIP or UPND. Why should I look forward to come to this platform to dish insults because that is what I expect in return? Why not bring to the table ideas that would help our country develop? It should be about Zambia, not little PF or UPND. Yes, compared to our country, these political parties are SMALL ISSUES. By God’s grace I have been to school, but I respect those that have not. They are human first. We need patriotic hardworking Zambians to develop our country, no educated UPND or illiterate PF, MMD or UNIP.

the difference between me and you is that where as you are obsessed with discussing winning elections by a mere few points based on a minority win, we are more interested in discussing policies and ways in which we will move zambia forward. How hard is it to win an election as incumbent party with an electoral commission that is not independent? What is even more disappointing is that you did not win that election with a majority. Losses were made by the pf whereas the only party to gain was the UPND hence putting us as largest opposition now. It is not about how many times you have lost. it is about being persistant. we love this country so much that we will never give up until change to benefit all zambians under the upnd comes. slowly it is happening

first u have to do a research province by province,how was HH performance in other 7 provinces?
u will understand that it will take HH many years for him to win the heart of majority zambians especially in eastern province and muchinga.

mind u HH is not a factor,as PF how can we be worried to someone who was giving much time to campaign and yet was rejected by the zambia people?
we campaigned for 30 days and we conversed the people of zambia to vote for us. what more if we campaign for a year?

u have to worry becoz u have been in the system for so long
go back to the drawing board and analyze why HH has been rejected so many times.
we in PF govt we want to see to it that every jim and jack have food to eat at the end of the day,that is why we want to set up milling companies in each province

For once Zedians discuss real issues that are affecting the common Zedian. Insulting each other just shows your level of thinking. NEZ, JJB and Jane Mulenga are typical UPND cadres who have nothing to offer. They will continue insulting our leaders in govt because they have no manners even bad ones. Wish HE EL long life and wisdom as he rolls out development to all Zedians.
