South Africa has closed its consulate in Lagos, Nigeria, following anti-xenophobia protests there, Netwerk24 reported on Tuesday.
Protests were held outside the consulate and at the South African High Commission in Abuja.
South African consul general in Nigeria, Sam Monaisa, said in an e-mail to the South African business forum in that country that the closure would remain in force until Thursday.
The situation in Durban had calmed down, but he was concerned about the Nigerians that were being repatriated, he wrote.
Nigerians were using social media to blow an already tense situation in South Africa out of proportion and stoking emotions.
This was why Nigerians maintained that their compatriots were being killed in South Africa daily, he said.
He warned the forum’s members to stay alert and not move around unnecessarily.

It is saddening when as a continent that is supposed to be fostering unity, we are busy fighting one another. This is indeed a good lesson that poverty is as bad as war. A hungry man is an angry man. The sooner governments such as the pf and other useless ones across africa learn this the better. because good governance translates into good economic management which leads to economic growth and thus prevents the need for killings based on economic misfortunes. We in the UPND promise the zambian people sound economic management which will increasse opportunities for zambians within their own borders. vote upnd

When one declares a place as NO GO for some one or indeed a group of people is NOT different from xenophobia because the intention is the same. We have had the MAPATIZYA, and some areas in Northern, Eastern for example being said to be no go areas for others. It is these kind of things that generate bigger problems eventually and are xenophobic.

firstly am not tonga and secondly the ones that need to change their attitude are those that are failing the zambian people by having no capacity to manage the economy. Please learn to get your priorities right. You act like you are in oppostion. that is why come 2016 we will put in opposition where you belong. It is funny that alot of mud is thrown at my brothers the tongas and yet they do not even respond or say a single thing to you tribal elements within the pf. it must be very frustrating fighting a battle that is in your head

Black South Africans are a big let down to the entire Africa. Am sure the white South Africans are not surprised. That is why they confined them to Bantustans because of this barbaric behaviour.

stay strong. Happenings abroad have an impact on our internal issues. I am sure the crisis in south africa proved that. Learn to open your head and analyise things logically and relate them to your internal issues. This is a globalised world. The same boko haram that people are mentioning above can gravely impact you and i. do not think you are shielded by your ignorance and limitation to fully analyse things. vote upnd
