A 33-YEAR-OLD man of Kalunga village in Zimba has committed suicide by setting himself alight in a thatched house a few hours after members of a local church prayed for him.
Both Southern Province commissioner of police Mary Chikwanda and Zimba district commissioner Elizabeth Kalaluka confirmed the incident which happened on Tuesday at about 09:30 hours.
Ms Chikwanda identified the deceased as Aggrey Katobela of Chief Sipatunyana’s area. The reasons for Mr Katobela’s actions are not known, except that he is the seventh person to commit suicide in his family.
Ms Chikwanda said the deceased’s relatives opted to bury him the same day he died.
And Ms Kalaluka said Mr Katobela, who came from a family that has a history of members committing suicide, took his life after exhibiting strange behaviour and members of a local church were called in to pray for him.
“It’s like this issue (suicide) runs in their family. The mother to the deceased had 12 children and Mr Katobela becomes the seventh person to die in a similar manner as his six siblings,” she said.
Ms Kalaluka said Mr Katobela, who had “not been himself” for a fortnight, took his life in his house, a few hours after the people who had been praying for him left.
“The man had not been himself; he was talking and moving around, so his father invited people from the church to pray for him. After the prayers, the man later went to sleep, but afterwards his wife saw him removing grass from the roof. When she asked him what was going on, the man never responded,” she said.
Ms Kalaluka said it was at this point that the deceased’s wife saw their house in flames.
“She screamed for help but it was too late,” she said.
A wife and five children survive Mr Katobela.

we in the UPND feel your pain too and understand just how painful poverty can be. In a very rich country such as zambia it is saddening to see many people living a life of poverty due to pf’s lack of sound economic management and priorities. We ask you to vote the upnd in 2016 in order to salvage this country. we thank you

USA has poverty in certain areas of the country is that due to unsound economic activities? You NEZ is the most annoying blogger on LT. You are the most negative human being I have ever encountered and I hope the universe is listening to your negativity and will dish you the same portion.
Poverty exisits from the times of UNIP to PF rule today. The economic dynamics of a raw material exporter like Zambia which only depend on Copper and have 90% of the economic activities in foreign hands (Not put their by PF) are more complex than your bleming the PF.
You need to reflect more soberly for your campaign strategy for the UPND to succeed. Your current shoting anyhow without aiming is actually pitiful!

People can be so ignorant. A simple case of a poor family in poverty . Look at how many kids she had. It ain’t means she couldn’t manage to give them the best upbringing due to pooreeconomic management by previous government. Now the kids grown we have another useless pf government that doesn’t care about the poor such that the children have failed to survive and are stressed due to suffering such that they opt to end life. Meanwhile kaiser Zulu and lungu are busy abusing tax money. Vote upnd

The family has a history of suicide. This family is most likely predisposed to depression or they are suffering from bi-polar disorder leading them to having auditory hallucinations. The delusional sounds from the hallucinations may actually lead to committing suicide. The article state clearly that the man was not himself for 2 weeks.
It is important for doctors from our mental hospitals to take interest in this family and findout why they commit suicide and offer counselling or medication if that would help. This is not a matter of suicide running in the family, but more like a lack of access to mental health care by the Katobela family.
May the soul of the departed rest in perfect peace!

In the rich & (new) educated Southern Province? Well, well, well. And what connotations can be derived from one hunging himself “just” after being prayed for? Aushis would say: “Alale mayoooo!” In Swakaland we say “Boooobeeeeee!” While in Tongaland we say “WEEEE!” Impotet prayer? Lost case? TIME.

You New Educated Zambia, u are not doing anyone a favor not even yourself. How can u b so negative that even on a suicide death u still find cause and blame government??
This is a clearly demonic issue which needs serious pentecostal kind of prayer or charismatic prayers where which craft, demons and all forms of ungodliness is exorcised. I would not recommend any other kind of prayers which are offered by people who hold positions in church because of the volumes of books they have memorized. Help me tell that quarter of the village to find a serious pentecostal church or charismatic team to pray with them then the solution to the suicidal matter will leave the family for good. Amen.

Joseph, read my blog above! This family needs psychiatric help not prayers. The family must have bi-polar disorder!

Their Frustration is getting worse from below knee levels to above shoulder levels. Technically its a way of Putting more and more Valueless blame on Government, and this is called suicidalmanslaughter. Meanwhile,Enjoy your Freedom of Blogging Nonsense.
