STATE:No Condoms In Schools

Government will not distribute condoms in schools until sufficient evidence is provided to prove that it can reduce teenage pregnancies.
Education Deputy Minister David Mabumba said in Lusaka yesterday that Government would not distribute condoms to school going children because reproductive health activists had not justified their effectiveness in reducing teenage pregnancies and early marriages.
“Government is not distributing condoms in schools. We have heard the call on the same issue but we cannot do that until evidence is given to prove that it will work,” he said.
Mr Mabumba was speaking at a high level consultative meeting on challenges and opportunities of adolescent girls in Zambia organised by the World Bank.
He revealed that Government had put in place measures to address the problems of teenage pregnancies and early marriages.
The re-entry policy for girls that fell pregnant while attending school was one of the measures. Another step taken was the re-introduction of early education countrywide especially in rural areas.

Youth and Sport Minister Vincent Mwale said Zambia was lagging behind on the policy to introduce or not to introduce condoms in schools.
Mr. Mwale said it was unfortunate that not all non-governmental organizations (NGOs) agreed on access to condoms for school going children.
He said the matter was under debate for more than a decade now and NGOs had not provided sufficient evidence to show that advantages outweighed the disadvantages in Zambia.
The messages on sex for adolescents, Mr. Mwale said, should be the same in school and in the community to achieve proper results.
The two ministers were responding to an appeal from an adolescent who started engaging in sex at 14-years-old and fell pregnant at 18-years-old.
The girl said it was important for Government to facilitate easy access to condoms, contraceptives and reproductive health information in schools in order to prevent pregnancies among school going girls.
Meanwhile, Chief Chibesakunda has called on chiefs to embrace the positive traditions that deterred youths from engaging in sex.
He said village gatherings, like ‘Insaka and Ichibwanse’, that pondered issues and passed resolutions should be reignited.
Chief Chibesakunda said high poverty levels should be addressed in order to reduce teenage pregnancies in rural areas.

I agree with you. Kids just need a good @$$ whooping. Nothing like condoms and sh!t. What is wrong with us these days? What happened to charity begins at home? You want to teach 16 yr olds how to put a condom on a man yet you fail to encourage them to abstain especially in an era of HIV/AIDS? They will still have sex yes, but lets try by all means to encourage them to stay away from sex so they can focus on their studies. They have all the time to learn about sex. Lets not take the easy way out with the condoms! Damn!!

I am pretty sure 92.87% of those condoms just end up in teachers homes, handbags and wallets… and also used on the same kids.

Oh yes. I remember attending a camp meeting back in secondary school and the theme was on HIV/AIDS among the youth. During the day, everyone looked sheepish, in the evening, people were in camps and the teachers ‘cozied’ up to the pupils. We went to bed around 22, 30 mins later, our classmates and some of the teachers disappeared only to come back an hour later. In the morning, my vigilant mother checked up on me, I narrated how the night went, she had me pack up my bags immediately and that’s how I left. I was never allowed to attend such again, it didnt even matter if it was a church invitation. Years later, I am thankful my mother was so strict with me, I turned out REALLY WELL. *feelin ma’self*
Parents should try to take an active role in helping their children at home. Teaching about condoms should be the last resort (am not totally against it,some kids are difficult).

Good experience right there! Nowadays some parents have put total responsibilities on teachers to deal with sex education issues, this in turn makes some pervert teachers to capitalise on that and teach them explicit sex in the name of biology… later on go for practicals at his home.

A very silly strategy by a clueless government. So, the pf government is so dull it cannot realise the importance of concluding studies before making any changes? The fact remains that pregnancy cases in schools are high. So how foolish can one be to stop the use of condoms when sex will occur whichever way? Is it not better that atleast these young people protect themselves rathet than engage in high risk sex? This government is clearly clueless. tomorrow they will wake up and say no tv is allowed. kiki vote upnd

very naive way of thinking. Whether you like it or not, sex will always occur among youths. better to have preventative measures in place than leave it to the “hands of god” and hope that everything works out. PF grow up please and take charge

Why would one want to stop teenagers from having sex? Having sex is a perfectly natural activity, and it has been practiced by human teenagers as long as there have been human teenagers.

The mid to late teen years is when nature intends humans to begin being sexually active. The consequences are something society imposes on sexually active teenagers because society is controlled by religidiots who fear both sex and teenagers.

Police are looking for three women who allegedly abducted a man at gunpoint and took turns râpîng him before fleeing with his semen.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Constable Mncedi Mbombo said the 33-year-old man had been standing on the side of the road in Kwazakhele at around 08:00 on Tuesday when the women stopped next to him in a black BMW.

“The women asked him for directions but when he approached them, one of the women pointed a gun at him and forced him into the vehicle,” he said.

Mbombo said the women then allegedly forced the man to “drink something”, before taking turns to rape him in an open area on the side of the road.

Mbombo said the women had then left the scene, taking the man’s semen with them in a cooler box.

The problem in Zambia we just follow anything that comes. This issue of condomization and circumcision believe you me, someone in these international organization is eating the money and we are just being used as a porn in the pond! Am not saying it’s bad to use condoms even in the old days, condoms were there but were strictly for adults and especially used for family planning, not being given to boys and girls.

No matter how hard one would argue against this idea, the truth is that there is serious sex going on in schools. Though it sounds taboolish to distribute condoms in schools but i think this can help Zambia win the fight against AIDS and not the issue of pregnancies. It may seem as if you are encouraging pupils to have sex but the chaps know almost all styles already, infact better than adults. Anyway the decision has been made but let us not forget that these pupils are at risk, AIDS is real and more dangerous than pregnancy.
