They could vary in size and texture and can usually go unnoticed until they cause a blockage. This can then cause excruciating pain as they make their way into the ureter (the urine carrying tubes that connect the kidneys and the bladder).
Kidney stones are a common problem, that most people experience. Although this is not a life threatening disease, it can be very painful if you ignore it. In this article we highlight the symptoms, causes and treatments for kidney stones.
Causes
There are no specific causes of kidney stones. They form when the urine cannot dilute crystal forming minerals such as calcium, oxalate and uric acid. These crystals then stick together, creating kidney stones. Knowing the type of kidney stone helps determine its cause, which can help reduce future risks of developing them.
Symptoms
Kidney stones go unnoticed, until they begin to move to the ureter and block the urine flow, causing severe pain. Here are a few symptoms of kidney stones that one should be aware of.
Pain in the abdomen or back
Pain spreading to the groin area or testicles
Blood in the urine
Nausea or vomiting
Burning sensation during urination
Treatment
Kidney stone treatments depend on the type of stone and its severity.
Small kidney stones of about 5mm can be passed out through urine. Your doctor will recommend you drink plenty of water so that the stone gets flushed out of your body faster. After the stone passes, you need to send it for testing.
If the stone is about 10mm, the doctor prescribes medicines that help break down the stone for it to pass through the urine.
Another common medical procedure is the Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL). During this therapy, shock waves are passed through the skin of your abdomen for your kidney stone to break up and pass out through the urine.
When the stone is large and cannot be removed through any of the above mentioned procedures, the doctor recommends a keyhole surgery. These surgeries include Percutaneous nephrolithotomy or a Ureteroscopy.

Yes its true.
Mu Zambia ninshi ati, buloshi.
Mwayanakuliba pastor babufi… mwalipila nendalama shama miracle yabufi!!
good information. However, i doubt one would get the needed treatment under this pf government. Even their president travelled to south africa just for a simple procedure that they claimed he had 30 years ago at uth. Clearly, it means under the pf we have gone back 30 years. sad but true. vote upnd and bring some sanity to the health sector
good infor, thanks. but aba ati ba NEZ what is he tryning to acheave by always demonizing the pf? atleast the pf is trying to make our lives easy by roads, ralways, hospitals and schools constraction. meal mill is readly avairable in the shops what more can you ask iye.hh ewakulakuletela impiya pan’ganda mwa?
@Observer….are you listening to yourself..kikikikiki…awe wansekesha..ati “atleast the PF is trying to make our lives easy by roads, railways, hospitals and mealie meal is readily available…you talk like a seven year excited child who has never seen a road or a railway line…These things have been there from time in memorial my dear…what is the use of having hospitals which have NO medicines and your leaders fly out for treatment? What is the use of having mealie meal available if people cant avoid it? What is the use of having good roads when fuel is so expensive…my dear be honest with yourself and stop giving credit where it is not due. PLEASE
Pipo the situation under Pf is not as bad as you try to portray. Awe calila kuno Northwestern Province for Edgar. Pa St Daniels Catholic Pena nisotambe. Bane uyu muntu bantu bamukonda maningi! He is humble and therefore easy to connect with people of Zambia.
I can assure he is successfuly engaging with the masses. I see him deliver.
Yes if you are only reading the Post, there is everything wrong with PF, but if you balance up your source of imformation, you will appreaciate the strides made. I like edgar for another thing, he has concentrated on working while pipo like NEZ politicise.
What ever name you can call me,you called me an excited seven yrs old child but the fact here is that with good road network most areas are accesible and open for good business. i can not emphasize more on health let me draw your attention to the newly opened hospital in chiyengi.it has helped alot of people who used to travel long distance to access medication, imagine the distance from Chiyengi and Nchelenge.I can go on and on.
iwe with no medication in the hospitals what benefits are those roads. kiki busy building roads to nowhere.
OBSERVER HAS A POINT,NEZ WHY DO YOU HATE PF SO MUCH? BUT REMEMBER ONE DAY YOU WILL REALIZE THAT PF MEANS WELL, LIKE OUR DEAR FORMER UPND VEEP, MR KAPITA WHOM WE WELCOMES WITH BOTH HANDS.
I do not hate PF. I hate their incompetence, lack of vision and cluelessness in handling national issues. The only party to take this country forward is UPND. I was a PF member but couldnt live with fact of knowing that PF was not good for this country. I couldnt live with a lie. Join UPND and get some integrity.
try to elaborate on 1 pf incompetence.
2 what vision you’re talking about
3 pf clueless.
Appreciate the good points from the article; not politicking naimwe!
