MINISTER of Home Affairs Davies Mwila says Government will this year recruit 389 officers in the Zambia Prisons Service and improve their conditions of service.
The minister said Government is aware of the shortage of staff in the Zambia Prisons Service.
“The treasury has already given authority for us to recruit 389 officers,” Mr Mwila said.
He said this on Saturday when he addressed Zambia Prisons Service officers at Mukobeko Maximum Security Prison in Kabwe.
Government initially planned to recruit 600 officers but the number was reduced due to lack of funds.
Mr Mwila also said Government is addressing accommodation challenges for officers in the Prisons Service, Zambia Police Service, Department of Immigration and Drug Enforcement Commission by constructing 10, 000 housing units.
Mr Mwila said the first phase of the project will involve construction of 2,500 housing units and Government has engaged Avic International undertake to do the works.
He also said Government will procure vehicles, equipment, firearms and uniforms for security wings under his ministry.
The minister also said Government will establish four milling plants under the Zambia Prisons Service to help reduce the cost of mealie-meal in the country.
“When President Lungu visited China, arrangements were made that China will give Zambia milling plants.
“The purpose of having these milling plants is to have more production of mealie-meal to reduce the price,” Mr Mwila said
Meanwhile, construction of a multipurpose hall for the Zambia Prison Service at a cost of K3.6 million in Kabwe’s Mukobeko area has reached an advanced stage.
The Zambia Prisons Service has engaged Lima Agro Construction to construct the facility, which will be completed in August this year.
Mr Mwila said he is impressed with the Zambia Prisons Service command for embarking on the construction of its own multipurpose hall.
“I want to assure that Government will always help you,” Mr Mwila said.

its a good idea so that they will ensure that the three country hard core criminals do not escape and these are; Rupiah Nyamasya Banda, Edgar Kachasu Lungu Muhammed Boko Haram Lungu and Davies Jona Savimbi Chama.
For those who didn’t know, Davies Chama is the biological son of the late Angolan UNITA Rebel Leader Jonas Savimbi no wonder you see a lot of evil and inhuman traits in him (Davies); shooting at will at innocent civilians.
Rupia Banda, Edgar Lungu and Davies Chama are all hard core criminals who need to be heavily guarded by the Prison warders.

you have poor services and you employ more people. Meaning Pfs agenda is to make people more miserable and poor. Why not first make the conditions of current workers better and then think of expanding the work force? very foolish approach
