The Zambian people are doomed and should start preparing for the worst in an impending economic catastrophe, opposition Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) has warned.
Reacting to Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda’s move to seek Parliamentary approval to push Zambia’s external debt ceiling from K 35 billion to K 60 billion, FDD spokesperson Antonio Mwanza says Chikwanda had run out of ideas and needed to pave way for the mess to be sorted out.
And Mwanza says it was surprising the whole Patriotic Front government was behaving like business as usual when the country’s finances were dwindling to alarming levels. He noted that even after months of advising government on the prudent use of resources, the state had continued with no sense of urgency over the matter.
“Three months ago we told the Nation that the Budget had COLLAPSED. We advised Mr Alexander Chikwanda to quickly present an Emergency Budget to Parliament. The Government responded with insults and ridicule. But today the Minister of finance has succumbed to the truth.
The Budget Deficit has balloned to K20 Billion. That is almost half of the entire 2014/15 National Budget. And Chikwanda and his PF are now asking Parliament to allow him to borrow upto K60 Billion.” Mwanza said.
He advised government to cut down on the numerous trips and unnecessary expenditure and listen more to people’s concerns.
“The Bank of Zambia Governor Dr Kalyalya has informed the nation that this Government is borrowing monthly to finance it’s operations. He has told us that Lungu and his clique are spending more than we are earning as a nation. The revenue collection is down but the spending is ever going up.” the FDD spokesperson said.

Though I’m a PF staunch supporter, I’m not very comfortable with Alexander Chikwanda as Finance minister. May our president His Excellency Edgar Lungu swallow the bitter pill and engage Ng’andu Magande to take charge of this ministry. Politics aside, Magande tried as a Finance Minister. Chikwanda might have played a bigger role in the last presidential by-election, but that is not a passport to rape the economy of our country. A good finance minister will definitely change the direction of the economy.

we told you that this is what was coming our way.
it is not chikwanda to blame and no need to fire him.
he performed exemplary well under Micheal, therefore, it is the environment in which he is operating now. this environment is not favorable for technocrats and big brainers like chikwanda.
someone else is to blame.
I will point a finger at RB. how many trips did RB make during his tenure?

This is becoming a monthend jingle. As soon as one opposition party says something, the rest shall repeat it incessantly. Now, who is going to get credit for it? It is like we have a queen & king left on The chess board. No matter how perpetual your ‘Check!!’s will be, you’ll not say CHECK-MATE until you get support. Even from the pawn.

Ignore these tribal sentiments as they are meant to confuse you and make you forget about the real enemy. Whether you are Lozi, Tonga or Bemba, we all have one common enemy in this country currently. That enemy is PF who are taking this country backward almost in every thinkable sense. Right now they want to borrow $2billion and all you gullible Zambians want to talk about is tribalism. Are you serious???

Chikwanda does not operate in a vacuum. The trend in Zambia is such that technocrats are influeced by politcians and it is difficult for them to make independent decisions. The old man seems to work under duress believe me. This crisis is beyond one person, it involves the whole ruling class.

Even in our own homes we adjust on our expenditure when neccessary. Trimming the blotted cabinet is way and it is not true that the effects will be negative. The solution can not be borrowing more and more. Get into ventures that will generate revenue. What so hard about this.
