Kitwe Runs Out Of Elephantiasis Drugs

Elephantiasis WomanKITWE district has suspended the mass drug administration exercise against elephantiasis because the required medicine has run out.

According to district medical officer Dr Chikafuna Banda, at least 75 per cent of residents have received the drugs, but urged those who are yet to receive not to be skeptical about the exercise, as the drug was not harmful to human health.

“These issues of being skeptical about the drugs are unfounded. We are providing services to our people as our mandate. We can’t give drugs that are harmful to our people. I am here to state that we have suspended the exercise because we have run out of the drugs, though 75 per cent of Kitwe’s population has been captured,” he said.

“These drugs have no effect so people should not be skeptical but just seek medical attention. We want to ensure that Kitwe is free from diseases.”

And Dr Banda said his office did not publicise the exercise to avoid alarming the situation.

“What we did was not to alarm the situation. Some areas on the Copperbelt are not affected. For instance, Mpongwe is not affected and what could have happened if people heard and were not given the [drugs]?” he wondered.

Dr Banda said people should not be misled to think that those who took the drugs would be affected.
This was in reaction to some residents who have complained of body weakness after receiving the drugs.

Good it was dealt with at a very early stage because the mature worms can be in a body (lymphatic system) up to 6 to 8yrs. Thats agony my dear.

Hiding the spread of the disease to the population was stupid from this Dr Banda. Elephantiasis (Lymphatic filariasis) is spread just like malaria – thru a mosquito. What was so ‘alarming’ not to tell copperbelt people to get rid of mosquitoes thru the very old way we avoid them?

Also tell people these prevention measures are not to cure the already infected, but to kill the larvae of the mature worms (in human biology we call them nematodes) to stop the worm cycle/spread.

Yes @ NEZ. You are very very right. Congratulations on your new discovery that Kitwe running out of supplies is actually a deficit. Bravo! @NEZ. As far as you are concerned, Medical Stores stays and lives at KMB bus station!! WOW! How intelligent you are!!
@JJB, my thoughts too! If we can promote polio elimination, HIV, etc. Why cower away on elephantiasis? A disease whose cause is not self inflicted.

How can they avoid telling people about Elephantiasis spread by mosquitoes kwati ni Symphilis as you are saying. About NEZ I just didnt know what to comment on his, he has no idea medical supplies come fron Govt CENTRAL medical stores and deficit is actually on previous non-budgeted Govt expenses. Bwafya.

“mandate” Are you sure this word was used appropriately? Again the article is saying “they” have run out of medication, and here you saying ‘lets go and get medication’?… Andy are you ok or you meant your own daily medication? :-(
